I was looking over my records from this year tonight. Here's a question for you coyote and fox long liners. If you set a property opening day and do very well, then it stalls out plenty long enough to pull, would you come back later and set again if you see sign? Would you wait til next year, and go trap a different spot? I have seen sign like this and found that these fox and yotes are wise to traps, then I come back the next year and I do well again. What do you guys think?

I'm not a long liner but I would answer, If the property is showing new sign and it's convenient to get to , I'd set it up again. On the other hand, If you have tons of property to trap and some of it hasn't been set up yet this season, I would move on to it. As for K-9 being wise to traps...IMO, they don't know a trap from a rock. What they might be wise to is certain smells or appearances that look out of place or not natural. In situations like that, Well blended urine sets can pick up some of the most shy k9 in the area.

I usually set a property up and trap it hard until the catches stop for a week. Usually I'll stop seeing fresh tracks and scat all over the place. Won't catch anything.. I'll pull out and set somewhere else and won't trap that property sgsin until the next yr.

I'll rotate thru all my permissions then pull to get on new canines. Then after 2 weeks or so I'll rotate back thru spots closest to my house and reset if I see enough sign. Some prime locations stay set all season sign or not to take advantage of back fill..

I think one thing you must consider is that early season catches will be more pups than adults. The pups are more vulnerable to sets with dirt patterns than the adults are. They are not as good at catching their food yet so they can be fooled easier. Later in the season you will have more adults to deal with on the line and they will be more difficult to catch with generic dirt pattern sets. That is when more blending at sets will be required.

Sometimes it is better to catch the pups and move on before too much pressure is put on the adult population and then come back a few weeks later and set for the adults with more subtle sets like flat sets and post sets. It really depends on how you are trapping that particular area and how many areas/properties you want to trap at a time. If you have plenty of property to trap for the season your catch can be more by hitting those properties for the young of the year and moving on. If you have less property then you would need to catch more animals on those properties to equal the same amount of target animals.

What gray55 said. And keeping a more detailed log,as in sex, estimated age well go a long way in helping to understand the dynamics of your population. Also blind trail sets will take more Caucasus adults than standard sets. Jmo

I have a long season available to me so it is easy to run out of ground before I run out of days. I will usually pull for 3-4 weeks and go back in but usually with fewer sets. On coyotes it seems like I usually pick up 1 or 2 right quick but it rarely ever gets like the first time in. It also depends on what the gut pile situation is from deer hunters. Once those gut piles go away in late December and early January I have coyotes just vacate some properties altogether. I have just sort of figured out what properties hold some coyotes after the gut piles are gone vs what properties don't.

This year I trapped a new property for two weeks and pulled up. A month or so later I went back because I had to drive close by anyways and caught two more coyote and a couple more foxes. I'll probably continue to retrap places after a break and if it's convenient
