Thinking of buying coyote traps and wondering the pros and cons of these?
Any opinions?

Never used a k9 extreme but I got a dozen Montana 3 and the more I use them the more I like them. They bed easy, seem to hold coyotes and cat well and take the abuse the animals give them and keep working. They haven't failed me yet. Good trap for the money in my experience.

How are you planning to use them and how often are you checking that is a big part of what trap to use also what kind of budget are you on and do you have a lot of trap theft. I have trapped for over 55 years and used everything from longs springs, Sterlings, MBs, Victors coils, jump traps, Montgomerys or Montanas as they are now made and called and as of late Bridger dogless. If I am behind locked gates or on private Sterlings are a Cadillac but heavy and a bit harder to set. I have not tried K9 but they look like a good trap but heavy and pricey and I would not want to loose them or pack them far. Montgomery and Montanas are in my opinion a great trap, affordable to use, loose and replace and hold well. Longsprings are cheap buying them used and do a great job especially with PIT pans. I run a two to three day check running 2 foot of chain with 3 swivels and a 18 inch stake on prairie and tilled ground and loose very few coyotes with any of my traps save my Sterlings all my traps are 2 coiled and like I said very few pullouts.

Probably be a two day check on private land. Snared more fox this year than ever before so maybe should consider Extreme Jr./ something similar or will the modified coyote traps not be too hard on red fox?

Never used a montana, but they look like a quality trap. I have a extreme, and it is alot of trap. You might be able to get by with the occasional red in an extreme, but if your going to be half and half with yotes and reds i would probably go with the montana. I like my extreme and it has great catches on yotes, but I have yet to catch a fox in it. Also if you have to hike in a long ways the extreme would get heavy. From what I hear of the montanas they are great traps. I like my bridger modified dogless #3s. Great coyote and cat trap.

Sold everything to get extremes and juniors. Ran 6 dz extremes and 3 dz juniors and they are amazing traps. Caught fox in the extremes on a 3 day check and there was no damage to foot at all. I run them all fully modified. I’ve seen zero issue with how heavy they are.

I have dozens of Montana's and six Extremes both work as intended. I have years on the Montana's and a few months on the Extremes. The extreme's are HEAVY, harder to set and costly especially if theft is a problem but very well made. Haven't caught enough in the extreme's to pass judgement on them but I don't think I will be buying more. The Montana's do everything I need in a trap that is lighter easier to set and cheaper. Now if I were just starting out any BS trap would be hard to beat if longevity mattered plus you could recoup at least some of your money scrapping them, did I mention they were HEAVY?

I can't speak to red fox but the K9 Extremes are very hard on grey fox and that is on a 24 hour check. Most of my greys would not be in a K9X after 72 hours. It catches them too high on the leg and they either chew or break it fighting the trap. i like the K9X for coyotes a lot. But it is a lot of trap for grey fox...the K9 Jr is a better mixed bag trap. I am not really in red fox country. I have caught 1 in my life.

Both great traps but for extended checks the Extreme may be a bit heavy from what I gather, the Juniors might fit extended checks better. Ive ran a dozen Montanas for 2 seasons with zero losses , The Juniors for 1 season, I prefer the Juniors over the Extremes, I was surprised how well the extremes treated red fox. I bought the Extremes for deep snow conditions and they fit that to a tee. Keep in mind I'm on daily checks though.

I love the adjustable dogless system on the KOs. If I trapped North Dakota I'd have both the Montanas and KO Juniors and some MB550 os 4 coils. Then you'll know for sure what fits your style and terrain. The 550s are an awesome fox trap!! In 8 seasons Iv'e lost zero coyotes in 550s too.

Common sense catches alot of fur..

Im in the same boat, Montanas if i set where they may be gone the next check,Sterlings when i set on secure locations.never used the K9 or junior look really nice and look stout like Sterlings. One thing i will say when you make a catch in a Sterling it will be there when you check, can't say that about any other trap ive used.

Extremes are heavy I agree. But what are we looking for in a trap? I don't carry traps to far myself because I run a four wheeler. I think it all depends on YOUR style of trapping. If you have to pack traps for miles in a pack walking the extremes will kill you. But if you trap not far from a vehicle of some sort or are packing just a few at a time.... You will not find a better trap imho than the k9 extremes or jrs. It all boils down to the age old argument... Is this trap enough for yotes ? Kendall built a trap to take all questioning off the table. No more twisted and needing reconditioned traps for me so far. Now hold one..play with one... Set one and I would say there would be no questions asked. He makes one wicked heavy duty trap that is competitively priced period. And no I have never even met Kendall. Thank you sir for an awesome trap minkercooner ! All Jrs for me !

If your buying fully mod traps my extremes for 3 dz we're cheaper then when I bought 3 dz Montana's IMO I have no use for Montana's they didn't last for me but 1 season I lost alot fur in them I had an extreme ran over a week ago by a d6 dozer thank fully the ground was thawed and didn't completely trash the trap bent it a little yes but I moved that trap and yesterday I caught the 3rd yote since that happened I can't say I would be able to do that with other traps

I used to be a short chain guy until I tried long chains..... Now all my land traps have at least 18 inch chains. Thanks Red for making the light bulb come on.

Thanks everyone. Sounds like I need to try a few of each as we are blessed with high quality traps. I am not much fo tinker with traps - do the Extreme or Montana require some tinkering or are they ready to go right out of the box?

Have a great day!
