I found this while looking for a missing calf. The scat was old enough that there was no form to the turd, just hair and bones.
I immediately assumed that it was coyote scat, however the hair seemed to be possum. And that flew in the face of everything I've seen and learned so far.
The bones were pretty small I've only seen bones that size in possums and skunks.

So after playing with it for a min I was pretty puzzled.
I've never seen coyote scat with whole bones in it. Usually just shards or fragments of bone.
I did happen across a lion turd and it had a pretty large piece if bone in it.

Have any of you got any experience with this?
What was in the scat and what dropped it..

OoOoOoooh

My guess is its owl up chuck. Don't know the proper name but when an owl catches a new prey it often regurgitates a wad of fur and bones.

Great horned owl or another of the larger owl species is my guess, like the fellas above said, they up-chuck a pellet of fur and bones. Those bones are pretty big so I am guessing the big owls.

I had a bobcat kill, partially eat, and then cover up the remainder in typical cat behavior. It was on set pulling day but I did catch a cat in that set the next year. That is the only time I have had a possum killed in a trap.

I understand that but those bones didn't come from some small critter.

Hey Ken did you find that scat under a tree? And was that the only one?

They were under a group of cottonwoods. The first two pics were two different piles about 4' apart.

After thinking back it very well could have been rabbit hair. The bones seem the right size and would be exactly what the owls eat.
