These are the Cedar feeders I make and use to keep the Pileated's around... this year I am having trouble keeping them full.





I usually make a large batch of Suet... this fall I just loaded them up with Bear fat... they consume it slower than rendered suet... but they seem more aggressive, them and the other birds waiting on tree branch's for their turn.

I always figured the great blue heron to be the pterodactyl of the bird family.

It is the cold we have been having this winter

I have been doing the same thing for 40 years and those years when it gets extra cold they really gulp down fats of any kind even types of birds that normally dont

Next to a springtime gobbler one of the loudest birds in the woods.

We have a pair that hangs out around here. We see them on the suet feeder in the winter and around the fruit trees and grape vines in the summer.
Just an amazing bird to watch.

As one that loves seeing birds, I have no love for the Pileateds; they damage trees and even homes sometimes. Shoo, stay away!

There is a pair of them here now, one was on the feeder and the other one was in some trees 60yards away and I could hear that one through the house walls... Haha!

Great blue herons remind me of pterodactyls too. Great blue herons even sound like what I would guess pterodactyls sound like, when they are nesting in the Spring.

Pileated woodpeckers did huge amounts of damage to my mother's neighbors house, which was empty for over a year. They had to replace large amounts of siding and had water damage.

Made a feeder along those lines shortly after moving here. So far no takers even though see them fly by often. Feeding birds in the south sure is different then up north with snow cover. Our most frequent visitors other then the hummers in summer is snow birds.

We have a few of them up here. They are leaving peccar tracks on every Jackpine tree behind my place .

This is the first year in a while we haven't had any. Fun to watch beat the heck out of my suet feeder.

Nope, brown pelicans flying over the water have that prehistoric look patented.

Most folks around here call them Indian Hens or Wood Hens. Very cool birds.

we have lots of them here, they eat the fruit of the poison ivy

jumping a blue heron in pure darkness, will make a person re-consider their life choices...cuz in pure darkness, that sound, will rattle you to the core.

Pileated's, just fun to watch, and in a good stretch of winter grounds, the sound carries for many miles. They seem to have vanished from my neck of the woods, but i aint been out and about like i used to. Old squirrel hunting legend says, if you have woodpeckers, you have squirrels...its not flawless, but for the most part, dang accurate.

We have a pair of those Woody Woodpecker birds living in our woods. Sounds like a monkey fight when they get loud. They been keeping busy trying to eat all of the Emerald Ash Borers (losing battle).

I just use the smaller green cages. I have five of them. Ive had a pair of Pileated for some years enjoying the suet-year round. So do all the other suet birdies.

They do sound like a frightened chook sometimes as they fly. In quiet woods, they sound so loud as they slice away on trees, you'd almost think a person is taking a hatchet to a tree.

Never thought of them eating those...

My first pileated showed up today. I watched the dang thing eat half my suet in one sitting. LOL
