.... it seems my dream is becoming a reality.
As I get closer to arrival in AK I've got some questions.
Let's start with cold weather clothing.
Listing from sox and insulated varieties of underwear, what do you recommend.? Then boots.? Then layers.? Then either bibs or pants.? Then parka (NB3.?) Then mitts & gloves.? Then suits when it's -50F and you're tooling along on your snowmachine.?
Next, let's talk coping with the winter blues due to the darkness. Vitamins.?
Next, The gawd aweful swarms of biting buggs.? DEET.?
Next, Let's talk camp firearms (His & Hers) for those trips to the outhouse in the dark, or when a bear wants inside camp.
Next, Let's talk camp water, drinking and cleaning yourself and stuff.?
Next, Lets talk food cache, and meals.
Next, Let's talk bush pilots to and from camp.
Next, Lets talk cabin generators and lighting.
Next, Let's talk electronics, GPS, satellite phones, radios, and emergency communication with both your pard back at camp, and the "civilized world."
Next, Let's talk tools and small engine repair crash courses for generators, snowmachines, and chainsaws .
That'll be a good start. If you think of other "importants," let me know, and we'll talk about it also., as I'm not a quitter and won't be leaving.

For a while there 358wsm, I thought you were serious about this. But I do not see any questions about what canoe to buy.
If you have been on this forum for a while, you will obviously have observed just how critical a piece of equipment a canoe is to L48 "dreamers."
Carry on...

Pete Next, Let't talk mounting hardware for runners, mast, and sail for hardwater canoeing.

Pete Next, Let't talk mounting hardware for runners, mast, and sail for hardwater canoeing. Joke all you want, but my brother and I did just that and made it 350 miles through 2 states, from the Piedmont of NC to the Atlantic.

Maybe I missed it somewhere, but where in Alaska are you planning to move to? The questions you've asked are pretty much impossible to answer without knowing where you'll be. (Sorry Texans)

I left out the whole clothing thing because it depends on where you are going to be Next, let's talk coping with the winter blues due to the darkness. Vitamins.? I'm too busy trapping and enjoying winter it has never affected me personally
Next, The gawd aweful swarms of biting buggs.? DEET.? DEET for sure I like Bens Next, Let's talk camp firearms (His & Hers) for those trips to the outhouse in the dark, or when a bear wants inside camp. fireearms fpr trips to the ouythouse ? once again it depends on your location some places the bears aren't an issue others it is best bet IMO a 12 gauge with slugs and 00buck Next, Let's talk camp water, drinking and cleaning yourself and stuff.? wash in the spring thaw and again before freeze up any creek will do :))) Next, Lets talk food cache, and meals. once again where ? Most small towns it is no different than any place else if your talking a remote cabin weather tempature a lot of variables there Next, Let's talk bush pilots to and from camp. same thing it depends on where you are every region has their pilots you want to fly with and then there are the ones most wont get into the plane with Next, Lets talk cabin generators and lighting. Simple one for me here HONDA 4 stroke generator
Next, Let's talk electronics, GPS, satellite phones, radios, and emergency communication with both your pard back at camp, and the "civilized world." I carry a iridium Sat phone it is expensive $245.00 every 6 month but as a good friend put it when we considered buying the phone and then the whole cost how much is your life worth? I got the phone prior to all the inreach type of stuff being available Next, Let's talk tools and small engine repair crash courses for generators, snowmachines, and chainsaws . learn how to work on all of them and not just in general but specific to the type you plan on owning . Some of the new 4 strokes and etechs snow machines can be very complicated just to get at things
That'll be a good start. If you think of other "importants," let me know, and we'll talk about it also., as I'm not a quitter and won't be leaving.
We get out of life only as much as we really want and work hard enough to achieve

Fishermann, I don't mean to avoid your question, but I am not at liberty to discuss those details at this time. There will come a time, but it is not now.
Let's just say that it chose me and leave it at that for now.
Thank you for respectfully understanding.

I've never read the "Dreamers Thread" . Just get up here. Bring lots of money. You can figure all that stuff out after you get up here. X2 There are very few universal rules, and you haven’t given us very many details. There are far too many variables to help you very much. What will you be living in? House, cabin, tent, building a cabin? What kind of access to civilization will you have? Road, river, airstrip, snowmachine, ATV? Are you going to own a place in town? How often will you be going to town? What’s already there wherever you’re going? What do you already own to bring with you? What’s your budget? We could write you a million dollar list of brand new vehicles, tools, equipment, guns, traps, and all commercial transportation costs, but you can get started with a lot less. Will you be working? Will you have adequate income or are you trying to do the “live off the land” thing? Do you want a list of everything you’re going to want eventually, or just to get started? Guns for example. You want to start out with a versatile high-powered bolt rifle, in the ballistics range of 30-06, 300 WM, or 338. Then of course you want a .22 for small game and dispatch. A 44 Mag (minimum) is nice to carry in lieu of the rifle when bears are around. If you’ll be waterfowling you’ll want a 12 ga. And as you get to know the terrain and species you hunt you’ll accumulate more rifles for specific tasks. You can start out with 20 guns or with 2 and build as you go. Are you trying to buy a whole kit before you get here?
Boco couldn't catch a cold. But if he did, it would be Top Lot.

Some really funny stuff has been posted since I last checked in, some of you guys have a great sense of humor. It's late here, and I'm beat. So allow me to answer the questions tomorrow evening after work and we'll get on it. I will say, I do like the idea of Victoria's Secrets over building homes...let me look into that.

I understand the delima. You can't offer much help without more specific information.
I am a self employed carpenter by trade. I've been doing it a L o n g time. Yet I live a very humble (off the grid) lifestyle. My income pays the bills, puts food on the table for my wife and I, and allows for some recreation (we like to hunt, fish, trap, and camp.) We were making a move a couple years ago to another state, and one night as we were sleeping in a hotel room, someone(s) stole our entire enclosed utility trailer from off the back of my old truck. Everything we had with us for that move was stolen. All of our sporting goods, clothes, tools, etc. We've been rebuilding and collecting anew. She still has her 1955 Win 94 32 Spl, and I've a couple 12 gauges, and two Tikka's one a 6.5x55 and a 270 WSM, as well I still have my grandpa's 1926 Savage 99 in 300 Savage. (It along with oir traps and ice fishingngearwere safely in storage) Receintly I did a job for a gentleman in the lower 48 who also has property on the island of Maui. He liked my work so much that he flew my wife (she does a lot of my finish work) and I to Maui to work on several of his properties. I am currently finishing one of those jobs, and have several more to complete before the end of August. Timing and logistics being what they are, I suspect winter travel to AK is not a good move, unless I have work and housing aligned there. Over the course of the next several months I will be studying to locate a suitable location as it pertains to the trapline wherein we can reside and have sufficant employment to allow us the enjoyment of the things we like doing, working that line as one of them.
Therefore, I thought it wise to begin asking some particular questions durring this intern that we might be "more" prepared for life and conditions there. We live happily living humbly, and therefore we don't need much in the way of income, but....we'd like to live sufficently.
So, maybe you could help point us in the right direction and help us to find and do things right because we are committed to fulfill what we are setting out upon.
Many, many thanks to you in whatever you can contribute in light of what I've shared thus far, and even perhaps share with me the questions I should be asking. Given that, I will be more free to add more information when the timing is right.
Thank you.
Scott
