Every "den" needs something like this. There are over 400 bacula in this "coffee table" from 16 species. Took several years to accumulate all the parts. Table is quaking aspen (trembling aspen). Jack

This is something different if you can find one. Bears leave their calling cards on trees to make their presence known. I found one on a friends property and turned it into a lamp. Shade courtesy of the local Amish. The claw marks are clearly visible and there is still hair trapped in the bark. The Bears in this area like to scratch up on power line poles where they can find them. I'm pretty certain if I whack one of those down for cabin decor I'm going to get an unwanted visit from upset people. Osky

pcr and Bruce (and others)... I really like the "cluttered" look. Seriously. In my opinion, there should be virtually no wall showing, with every square inch telling another story or providing a memory. Well done!

Jack Like the table. Finally get to see some aspen used in furniture. I would expect it is easy to work with? None of the mills I have asked do anything with it except chip it for pulp wood. I have been tempted to spend the time riving some into boards with wedges and a froe to give it a try. I've got some nice clear trembling and big tooth aspen growing a couple places on my land. Any tricks to working it? does it warp a lot, plane fuzzy, etc... I have lots of other kinds of wood but have always wondered about aspen.

gryhkl. Aspen is one of the few "hardwoods" I have available to mill. Unfortunately, very soft wood. On the other hand, colors can be fantastic. Too, it doesn't seem to "yellow" with age, like everything else that I have in this country. For this table, the aspen was milled, then stacked and stickered for 3 years in a garage, then planed and used. Of course, very stable after that much time. I really like the stuff, and the whites, blacks, and reds are beautiful. No planing fuzz, no warp/cup/twist.
