The good ones go to auction and that is what they want-no more than an inch apart. The auction houses put this info out to try to get a consistent product for the buyers. The "good enough" attitude is one of the things that hurts the wild fur offering. But things are slowly improving with the younger generation and the easier flow of information nowadays.

I'm a practical man when It comes to putting up fur. I use a 2" spacing and I don't get all this so called scalloping. I do a very good job when I flesh my beaver. So they aren't on the boards for 2 weeks. When It's dry It's off the board and that takes about 5 days In my shop. And In that time I don't get any scalloping. So do what ever trips your trigger guys.
Boco Is a artist when it comes to putting up fur and that's a good thing.

Another example of good beaver put up using 1" nail spacing recommended by NAFA. The skin color of "Boco's" pelt is the result of frost scraping I suspect.

Hello Ed and well come aboard ! I'd suggest a Swedish hoof knife to use for scraping beaver hides after they are stretched. There's two different sizes I have and use each for different reasons. Allan

Thanks Boco, I know you and others have a wealth of knowledge and experience with putting up quality fur. I'm trying to carry on some family heritage from my grandfather and uncle, unfortunately I have waited until the age of 47 to start. Hopefully I can try to pass what little I know to my son and someday grandchildren.

I use pinning nails, and just tap them in with a tac hammer. I have had pelts rip out from some nails in the past. There are a couple ways to rectify this, the one I like best is to dry the pelts slowly at a cool temp(10c). The other is to raise the pelt up on the nails so the nails can bend inwards if your drying with heat. In both cases, dont drive the nails tight into the board, they have to "give" a bit no matter which way you dry them. Whether you board them loose or tight the pelts still shrink as they dry.
