Haven't trapped in many years, but am going to get back into this coming fall. Something that I"m not familiar with is the MB line. I see there are MB 550, MB 650, etc. I'm used to 1.5 double coil, 2 double coil, etc. Can anyone post what trap in the "MB" equals in the "coil spring" world. What is the main differences between an MB and say a Duke ?

MB (Minnesota Brand) is, for the mos part, top of the line. Head and shoulders above Duke.

MTP-Minnesota Trapline Products online catalog will give you comparable dimensions of all the coilspring traps they carry. You might consider American made vs made overseas.

Tom, one of the things that helped me compare traps and their jaw spreads was to ask several suppliers for the free catalogs they'll mail you.
MTP, Cumberlands, Sterling, Schmitt, Southeastern Outdoors, Dakotaline and a dozen others are available. I also like being able to have a few open at the same time to compare gear when preparing to purchase.

Brad's comparison is right on but just know that these are heavier and stronger springed than the 1 1/2's and 2's that you are used to.The number designation = the outside jaw spread,ie. 550=5.5",650=6.5",750=7.5".

They are also about as close to ready,out of the box as any,unlike the old coils.I know of big mountain lions held in 2 coiled,MB550's so it's not your Daddies old #2 coil.

It's not bang on but it's close-

MB450 = 4-1/2" jaw spread
MB550 = 5-1/2"
MB650 = 6-1/2"

If you like a light pan tension, or no pan tension the MB traps are a bear to adjust...Either bend the rod dog on the 550 to where it looks like a boomerang, or file the dog engagement contact points...A genuine concern if you trap smallish animals like gray fox...Not nocking the MB line, they are overbuilt, and great quality traps...So if a light, or even no pan tension isn't important to you then MB is really tough to beat...Just want you to make an informed decision on your trap choice.

Some around here have held wolves in the 550s. The 650 was a trap of choice for many Wi wolf trappers a few years ago.
