Would some of you look at a couple of pictures and tell me what is going on had this happen twice now and I did not number my traps to see if it was the same trap or something I am doing wrong. One pic is the set and the other is in question was it dug up or a miss ?.Hope the pictures turned out correct. Any help will be greatly appreciated.

It’s probably my eyes, but these pictures are too small, too fuzzy on blowup and I’m too old to see what you’re talking about

Is there a place on here that explains how to resize the picture to upload it ?

A miss. Any tracks? Deer snap traps and pull out like that sometimes.

If the pan tension is too light it could be firing before a predator’s foot is fully committed and weight applied resulting in a toe or nail catch and easy pull out.

From the third picture I can see the bottom of the hole, looks shallow. If it is and a coyote can pull the bait or lure out , he will then roll on it. Dig your hole 12 to 13” deep and you will likely catch him before he gets your bait out of the hole !

I have not checked pan tension with a tester, but I did tighten the pan up some on all of my traps after the first miss. Any recommendations on pan tension I have not purchased a pan tension gauge yet.

A 3# hammer takes a lot of guess work out of the equation. I prefer four pound pans but that still won’t help if they are rolling on you !

You can make a pan tension tester with a water bottle.

Not that I am the most experienced guy on here, but, I had about a dozen sets that were set off just like that. It was deer for me, the ground on the sets that I had coyotes pull out of was much more disturbed than the areas where the deer set off the trap. And the one set that I had dug up, the coyote pulled my wool plug and dug out the bait stick out of the hole. Just my thoughts.

Had one dug up just like Hobbs described above , this one the bait was still in the hole. Any suggestions on how to keep deer and hogs out, if I set on the sides of the roads the hogs root them up and if I set in the road the deer and hogs are stepping in them. I will pull them all in the next day or two and check pan tensions as well.

Urine is what bring deer to your sets, stop using it and see what happens. check your PM box

Was it just two sets throwed? If so, reset em and forget it.

Trapping is not an exact science. Too many variables to worry much about a few traps that missed.

I used to have that all the time when I first started. Do you have a high deer density? Are you using urine? We have a lot of deer and as soon as I quit using urine my problems with snapped traps went away.
