Someone on the forums mentioned using electrical conduit for a drowner rod. Anyone tried these?
Should be a little lighter in weight, but take up more space.
Any thoughts?

I use that PVC electrical conduit for rat stakes. But It wouldn't work very good for a drowning rod. And metal conduit would probably bend petty easy. And It's not cheap.

Are we talking rigid, EMT, or PVC?

Of those 3 choices, rigid would be the only one I would seriously consider unless we are talking mink/muskrat trapping. EMT and PVC are just too flimsy for much else.

I have access to tons of rigid electrical conduit. There are always a few pieces that are warped or bent on arrival... They usually get scrapped, so theoretically I could bring those pieces home (with permission of course) and use them.

But I've never given it much thought.

Conduit is made so that it can be bent to form 90's, offsets, saddles, etc... So any conduit suitable for use as a drowning rod would have to be big enough that it's weight would be equal, or greater than, other materials like rebar.

If you had a bunch that you got for free it would work in a pinch I suppose.

I have cut up scrap pieces of rigid and used it to make drowner locks for rebar rods. It works well in that regard.

I'd think it is too hard/smooth that most locks might not actually lock a lot of the time well like on chain or rebar'. Even fiberglass is softer letting locking "edge" bite.

I've had beaver pull the deep side of my 1/2" Rebar rods and turned them into a pretzel. I'd be nervous with conduit. Stuff happens.

I would like to see a picture of a 1/2 inch rerod twisted like a pretzel by a beaver. Must be some tough one in your neck of the woods.

Wish I had more time to trap....

"Lock up" is physics actually.........The diameter and location of the hole has EVERYTHING to do with locking success. Yes, glass is more forgiving. The hole needs to be further from the bend of the angle iron.

I make them out of 3/8" smooth rod and have never had one pretzeled and caught up to 74 pounders...earned a living off nuisance beaver work for over 5 yrs.
