Hey guys,

Would a 15”x16”x36” single door work for beaver?

Thanks for your input,
Jim

Yes depending on the set, quality re-enforced cages are a must. I use 15x18x36 quite often

x2. I want to see it. I wonder how hard it is to coax 1 into a cage.

Not hard at all. Just modify how you might set a 330. Channels, grass/mud wired to back/side of cage with castor, dam break, etc.

I know single door traps can work, but the versatility of a double door trap is unbeatable. And though beaver can be taken in land sets, double door traps set in water really work very well as beaver know they are safe in water and spend a lot of time in water. Conibear traps have been the standard for decades, so using cage traps mirror conibears makes a lot of sense. You really do not need a trap with a large opening like 15x18 with 270 square inches of surface opening. Even 12x12 or 10x12 double door swim through cages with only 120 square inches of opening will work with beaver in channels under water. Double door traps are good for just about everything, coon, skunks, chucks, squirrel, armadillos etc. They provide more options.

After running cameras on them. That bigger opening may not be needed , but it sure helps cut down on refusals.

If it makes a track on this earth , I can catch it.

I've got a kit beaver left I need to catch, thinking about using a cage as a foothold is too big and it could slip through a 330. I'm talking 12" overall length. Some of mommas castor in the back? Sounds like a plan to me, any takers?

I would use some of "mommas" oil from her oil gland, either alone or in combination with the castor.

Agreed, using the scent from a beaver in the colony is a good bet for a shy beaver. When they won't come into bottled castor they will sometimes hit castor from a family member. I'm not certain in what manner others set cage traps or what sizes they use. Most of the time we rely on 12x18, 12 high 18 wide. At times we will use a smaller 12x12 and as large as a 15x24. Refusals have never been an issue with any of the cages. If they won't go into a cage of one size, they won't go into any cage. Either they will or they won't regardless of size. On the rare very occasion they will not even go into an oversized cage, it's not worth trying to make it work or fight with them as it wastes time, I just go to another plan, snare or foothold.

I have not found this to be accurate for me. The larger the opening, usually the easier it is to get the animal into the cage. Especially when the trap is on land. The width of the trap in relation to the height and what type of trigger used with the type of set is also very important as to the number of places the trap may be used most effectively at a location. Even the door type and how fast it closes is also very important.

A short (32")guillotine powered double doored (long spring) trap that is at least 14" wide and has a set door height of at least 16" has been proven to me to be the best beaver cage trap I have ever used. That size makes the approaching beaver feel less wary. The 12" tall lock bar designs work but limit set locations more so than a guillotine doored trap. Sometimes it is best to use one design over another simply because of a particular situation.

One would never know unless they have used what I have described.

The easiest set to me is two 14x16x32 powered door guillotine doored traps using a conibear trigger, set side by side in 4 to 6" of water. Place grass between them and place lure on grass. Often you will catch two. If the stream current is fast and you are setting a stream, bend wires up or make the set perpindictular to the stream current. One can even hang lure on trigger depending on type of set.

Another very effective set is a dog sized powered door, side door trap set in 6 to 8" of water on a level area in a pond. Preferably near a cross over or active dam. Just place lure on clump of grass in trap above trigger like a koro.

A koro beaver trap is a very good trap also because it appears most open, but it is limited to baited sets.

So what is needed is trap variety to cover the most situations.

I would think if you made a pocket set with bait behind to where the beaver had to go in the trap to best get close to the lure would work, especially if the trap was set in water just over the pan. Two traps side by side would be better.
