Anyone working the day shift and trapping has to do this. My question is, what is everyone using for light? Headlamps, flashlight, both? What brand and lumen output? I used a fairly low output, 2 AA headlamp and a small Atomic flashlight. OK for dispatching, but not real good for older eyes to remake sets. I'm thinking something in the 800-95- lumen range and maybe some type of LED work light that would set on the ground while remaking sets. This is for coyotes mostly.

I use a cap light, under the bill. Works for dispatch and remakes.

3togo...

You should pose this question on the Wilderness Living Forum. It's generally darker than the inside of a moose for most of the season up there in the north. laugh

I use a 150-200 lumen led for checking. Smaller 100 lumen i hold in my mouth for remakes.

Lights up everything with multiple settings. Also has a spotlight setting that goes quite the distance. Best headlamp I've purchased.

We run ours at night except on weekends. Day job and boys have school. We run them once all three of us are home.
Sometimes if we are busy I get up at 3:00 AM and run them.
Get brightest flashlights and headlights you can find. It's safety and it's much more fun when you can see what you are doing.
150 lumens is minimum headlight I buy, and also look at beam distance. Some are bright in terms of lumens but don't throw a beam more than a few yards. I want something that will take back the night. Makes it way more fun for all of us when we can see what we caught, the remakes, and so forth.
I bought two larger flashlights at home Depot that are really bright and you can see animal eyes shine a long ways away with them. Headlights too really bright and throw a beam really far. Boys like them a lot.

Streamlight makes a great headlight. I have been using one of their Argo HP lights for years. Very bright LED, Shock resistant, water resistant, lightweight, comfortable strap on your head or cap, two light beam settings Hi/Lo, etc. About $50 - $60. My light uses CR123 Lithium batteries which are not cheap. I order a dozen at a time, but they last a long time. BassPro has some of their lights.

I check traps in the mornings before work from a four wheeler. I have two fifteen dollar led head lamps from Walmart that I switch out as the batteries get week. Theses are the the lights I use for setting, and remakes. They have served me fine. I also have a fifty dollar Stanley rechargeable that is used to inspect the sets as I ride by.

My favorite headlamps have all been Coast brand. I’ve had several different ones, and they’re all bright, durable and reliable. Around here I can get them at about any lumberyard or auto parts store.

I have used many lites over the years. Started with a huge sealed beam lamp bolted on a hard hat with a motorcycle battery. Tried many combo flashlight hat homemade ones. Now I do like the small L.E.D. lites we have, but get tired of the batteries going dead often. I still like my Nite Lite brand lites the most. A little heavy on the cap, but they give me super bright lite for hours and hours... even days and weeks on a single charge. The new Nite LIte L.E.D. lites put out a tight beam almost like a sealed beam 6V spotlite. I use mine for hunting, trapping, camping, fishing, livestock, irrigation, farming. etc. Built tough. But I am kinda partial to Nite Lite brand. I am a dealer. To each their own. But they are a great lite.

That is a GRDE headlamp. I bought one and went back for a second. I use them nearly every day and they've been outstanding. Surprising considering the low price.
I've started giving them as gifts.

You can get this light on Amazon for $12 a piece. They use a single AA battery, and I run all season on one battery. They are very bright, and outperform all other small handheld flash lights. I do run a small one on my head when I get going trapping hard for ease of redoing sets. For spotting traps/animals this is the first thing I hit them with. Every vehicle I own has one.

I run my traps at 4am with a side by side. I have a 30 inch light bar on it, lights up like daylight. I also use a small headlamp that uses 3 AAA batteries. Can't remember the brand, its out in the pickup. At that time of day, you can't have to much light.

NebrCatMan,
Is your Nite Lite similar to the Wicked Lite I see advertised?
Also, some of the smaller headlamp now use the 1850? lithium rechargeable batteries. Reviews I have read people claim to be able to light up a deer hundreds of feet away. Some just have a projected beam, others have a beam and a spot, you can choose. Fenix and Coast are two. But if one Googles hi output head lamps there are many choices. If I was using an ATV I would have a light bar.

Don't want to or mean to highjack your post, but will be checking in the dark next year myself how close(I know as far as possible) do you guys get to a set if their is not a catch to inspect you don't have sprung traps an what not? When checking during the day I can use binoculars to check traps but that's not an option in the dark.

No closer than necessary, but it could be 10-20 yards, or 20 feet if I can't see enough. Part of the reason that I going to buy a better light.

My son and I use a couple of mini mag lights. With him leaving this summer after graduation, I'll probably go to a headlamp of some sort.
