When checking during the day I can use binoculars to check traps but that's not an option in the dark.
If you can see your set, you will be able to see the reflection of their eyes in the light. That won't help you see if you have a sprung trap though, will have to get close. With the light bar on my utv, I can see eyes from several hundred yards.

GRDE headlamp. Absolutely love it.

If it makes a track on this earth , I can catch it.

The boys love it when we see eyes, it's like Christmas for them checking sets. They have also learned the color and brightness of the eyes tells them what they caught before they even get close enough to ID it. Coons and cats reflect much differently than canines, skunks, or Badgers.
Makes it fun.

Money cannot buy you happiness, but it can buy you a trapping license and that's pretty close.

Petzl rechargeable headlamp is always on my head, I also have a Hilti 22volt LED worklight that takes standard Hilti 22v cordless batteries. Intense amount of light, and 12 hour run time.

In the boat, I have an 11500 lumen Kohree spot/flood wired into the boat battery that quite simply makes daylight whenever I want it.

Want to add a second this year.

Get a nite lite LED. It's bright as heck. I use it every morning for several hours and it's seriously bright and stays that way.

I wind up checking in the dark quite a bit with the short days. If I'm actually out and about, hiking, setting, etc I use a fancy headlamp, if I'm just in and out of the truck and close I grab the Fatmax which has been an awesome light. I've had and keep several around. Super bright but battery life isn't going to last you all night or anything. Couple hours max. The newer ones have a detent switch and they have a hi/lo setting too. Worth the $ as far as I'm concerned.
