What odor/oil would you choose for muskrat? How about coon?

Forty years ago I was 'coon trapping with carp for bait. Some slick snake-oil salesman sold be some cherry flavored 'coon bait. I don't think I ever caught a 'coon on it. I had to stop using it because it sure caught 'rats & they weren't in season when I was 'coon trapping. Never tried apple oil.

I have used sweetcorn oil with ground fish in pockets for coon as well as dp's.Those pockets took rats and beaver too.

I boat trapped 'coon in the late 70's early 80's. Had a set that a big 'coon walked by every night (tracks in mud). It was baited with a muskrat carcass. After about two or three night I re-baited with a dead fish I found along the stream. Had the 'coon the next night. Fish is what I found to be the best. I used walnut to fist sized pieces of carp.

That sweetcorn oil is a good product. We don’t hear much about it these days.

It was an experiment,we ran a boat line back in 2014 with all dp's.Basically for the ease of things and first check caught 44 coon.Back on land running pockets,I used up what was left just grabbing a handful and throwing it at the back of the pockets. For dp's,we found it would dry out in about 3 days,so mixed in a little glycerin with it. Idk, I know how crazy coon are about sweet corn so thought I would give it a try and it worked well.

The feed mill here carries a product that is liquid and used to “sweeten” molasses and other animal feed additives. It is relatively cheap and when mixed with ag grade molasses works pretty well to squirt in and around a DP.

That product, to my nose, smelled a lot like sweetcorn oil (sweet caramel odor) with a hint of anise.

Are you referring to a mix of apple oil and sweet corn oil?

Killed the rats and....coon on cherry oil lure few years back...bed a #1 1/2 coil with 3 ft well swiveled chain t -bared off in water....killer combo.

Try some cheap grape wine like Boone Farm and mix it with floater catfish food, rats love it.

Cherry works awesome for rats and nutria out here.

Don't use the whole bottle. Save half in case your not catching any fur............ And have a walking trapline of course.
