Well there is our problem. FBI and Special Prosecutor are blocking our ability to collude with Russia to see the wolverines...

That video is insane! That is a bunch of great looking wolverine. I wonder if they need some ADC work done, I will offer my services in exchange for the fur rights. Lol

Yea some real nice ones in that bunch! I thought it was interesting from a biology point of view too. Biologists are adamant that some animals have home ranges and dont tolerate company. Bears, marten, and wolverines are just some that they say this about. I've never bought into the theory. Animals go where the food is. I've seen many examples that contradict their theory. I've got places on my line where I will average 5-marten per mile or even more, and other areas where I will get none.

That's sort of my observations too Dave. I have caught three males the same night, within 100 feet of each other. Obviously they knew each other was near or they may have actually been traveling together.

On the other hand........I have a spot where two small drainages meet. Usually there is a resident gulo in each drainage. I have followed their tracks down those drainages but BOTH critters will turn away from the other drainage within maybe 300 feet of the intersection. I've seen that happen several times at that spot.

I also have places where I THINK wolverine are just transiting the area, rather than hunting. I have tried catching them at these locations but the sets are always ignored. I will catch those same critters 3/4 mile further on with regularity

As far as marten go....I have seen the same thing as you. Dead spots interspersed with dense populations.

Hopefully Jack will weigh in on this

I don't have any experience with wolverine, but I know a good deal about bear and marten. I agree with yukon254, even solitary animals will congregate at a food source. I caught 5 of my marten this year in the same trap, it was the first one on the line about 65 yards from the backdoor of my house. I believe the marten were thicker in this area because they could scavenge food from the homes nearby. I also have seen 9 grizzlys all sharing the same 100 yard stretch of water when the the salmon come in thick.

Yea Ken, its kind of interesting and a guy learns something new every year. Two years ago I had wolverine all over my line. Never seen anything like it. Ended up catching 6 before I pulled my traps. I could have easily doubled that number but I knew it was odd to have so many in the area. Every one that I caught was a male too. Only thing I can attribute the high concentration of wolverines to that winter, was the unusually high rabbit population.

I've mentioned this before, but one winter I caught 14 marten in one day/night at one spot. Someone had left the lid off the food barrels that were stored inside and they had a winters supply of food under one roof. I dont remember the ratio of males to females I caught but I do remember there were some big males in the bunch. An interesting side note to that story is that the very next winter the exact same thing happened again. The outfitter who owned the cabin went in in March and found the place overrun with marten and of course a big mess. In one night he shot 13 marten inside the cabin. The season had closed and he ended up getting charged. The biologists told the COs that there was no way there would be that many marten in one spot, ( due to their home ranges.) They actually got a search warrant and flew in there and counted the bullet holes in the logs. He had the marten so they knew how many he had killed. They ended up questioning me on the whole affair and my response was how else could he have shot 13-marten....do you think he was driving around shooting them out of trees. They didnt seem to understand that it would be impossible to find and shoot a bunch of marten out in the woods, and they didnt want to hear anything that contradicted their theories.

Yep ! i think as long as the competition for food is low, the inclination towards territoriality goes out the window.

As Conniboxer mentions about bears on a salmon stream above.

I wouldn't necessarily call marten "solitary". In fact they are pretty sociable/gregarious at certain times of the year
