Been snaring a couple years, tho this is the first year with much effort. Did pretty good I think but was hoping to get into so,e footholds for next year. Here in nodak you can start earlier with footholds. Anyone have advice on starter kits for footholds? What size traps do I need? From what I gather number 3 or 4 is good for coyote? Also, do you feel footholds are more effective than snaring in certain scenarios? Had good luck with some of our properties with snares but on others I really struggled even tho I know there is lots of coyotes there. Cow pastures are so wide open even in the trees I struggled with the snares. Would footholds be more effective since your trying to lure them in rather than just trying to set where they’re gonna be? Thanks for any help.

I would say I would lean towards the #3's for coyotes. Depending on your budget maybe MN 650's. I been using #3 bridgers 4 coiled and laminated or Northwoods #3 2 coil laminated. I don't think I would worry about using a #2 also. Caught many yotes in #2's.

Nodak,

Foothold traps will allow you to start probably a month earlier than snares here in ND and will be effective in the wide open pastures that are hard to set snares in. Coyote sized traps are likely #3 and above. I am running K9 extreme traps but am considering some KO Juniors as caught quite a few fox this past year. Another thing to consider is how to keep them functioning with frozen ground and snow. I am going to use waxed dirt/sand this upcoming season.

Lots of good traps to choose from.

Good luck!
Greg

Bridger 1.65 is my trap of choice short season for footholds last year, difting snow makes them difficult at best, what size snare cable do you use are you boiling them or paint? I figured out three differnt colors of paint color don't matter blends them in really good even in CRP, yotes avoid over head cover a lot, I like snaring corn feilds and CRP after the snow flys I aviod the woods...

Yote snares and Beaver Traps...
