Planning a trip to the coast of Maine. Flying into Bangor, Drive to Bar Harbor,Acadia National Park, Then heading north possibly as far as Prince Edward Island. Have 1 week planned. Planning first week of Sept. Anybody have suggestions, ideas, thoughts, must see's? Would that be a good time to go? Would the whales still be around and are they still fishing lobster? Comments Please.

I'm going up there a few weeks later then you. Never been there so I don't really know what to see or do.

Be sure to get off of the main highway and drive down into the small coastal fishing villages to see the true Maine. Also, There is another section of Acadia besides Mount Dessert Island, to the north, off of Rt.1.

i spent one summer working at the cutler navy base.. if you get a chance go visit a old cemetary.. there was one near cutler and overlooked the ocean. lots of neet inscriptions written on the headstones . think the oldest one we fount was 1540. would see whole familys died within a few weeks of each other children, mother , then the dad, i assume from the flu or some epidemic. went on whale watch out of eastport was fun had a humpback come right beside the boat . hope i get a chance to go back and eat fresh seafood . beautiful country and good down to earth working people!

Would love to camp but only have a week, so we will be flying into Maine and then rent a car. Hoping to stay in B&B's but probably will need reservations and not knowing an exact schedule it could be difficult. Whale watching and pulling a lobster trap is on our list. My wife loves poking around in old cemetaries so I like that idea. Also planning on getting into the small coastal villages. Thanks for the input, keep it coming.

Love Maine, but can't help ya along the coast much. Traveled rt1 once to get some lobster for the wife, but that was it.

The Maine North woods is where i head for. No people!

I know a guy that is a fishing guide in Forest City, Maine .A short drive from Bar Harbor. If you want to spend a day or two fishing he may be able to be your guide . I think Sept is mainly Land locked Salmon season .He has all the gear: all you would need is a license which he could help you with also

Lobster is no problem year round , whales will still be there .As mentioned get away from the tourist traps and see the real Maine. I have family not far from there and I live about 3 hrs away. Might want to think about an off shore fishing trip trip ,often see whales while fishing. I spend a lot of time in the Rangely area, western mountains . Great big beautiful state.

Sister lives in Eastport Been there several times. Thing you might like see are the Roosevelt family compound on campabella island you access this from a bridge at Lubec Maine since the island is Canada. The tides in that part of Maine run about 25 ft. at Eastport driving there at low tide bear ground, high tide all water. Eastport has the last stone grinding mustard mill in the USA been doing it since 1900. Many tasty kinds you can look them up on the internet Rayes Mustard Mill. You thought you might go to Prince Edward Island? A stop at Fundy National Park in New Brunswick Has the highest tides in the world at 50 plus feet. The draw back to that is it takes 6 1/2 hrs from high to low or hours to wait for the tide to get to a high or low point. Kinda like watching paint dry.But at least you can have pictures and show everyone you were there if you have the time to do so.

https://visitmaine.com/ helped us figure out our trip....been 4 times in the past 30 yrs.

LL Bean in Freeport, is open 24/7 and has a cool full mount of 2 bull moose fighting, BUT since they are anti trapping we didn't spend any $$ there...and when asked why I told them "LL Bean himself was a trapper and would be ashamed of your stance."

Beware of Lobster Rolls, they are addicting.

Plus, remember to stop at Oscar Cronks shop in Wiscassett and travel the coast and hit a few lighthouses

Don’t pass up Acadia. Great scenery. Went to Maine in August, Bar Harbor was packed with people at that time. I guess like most places, eases up after Labor Day.
