I constantly hear how if you are involved in shooting even if you did everything right and went by the book how it will cost thousands or even hundreds of thousands of dollars to defend yourself. It may cost everything you own even not counting the horrible aggravation you and your family would go through even if it was determined you were justified in the shooting. This can even be a lot worse in a state that doesn’t have the castle doctrine. I know the old saying that it is better to be tried by 12 of your peers than carried by six. I would like to hear your opinions. I am planning on getting insurance that is offered for self defense.

"I know the old saying that it is better to be tried by 12 of your peers"

In today's world from what I've seen, this statement scares me more then those that carry a CCW.

If you take the class by a reputable CCW instructor the legalities will be explained to you in great detail. Several have an Attorney that teaches that section of the class.

worth it to me, most don't know but you can pick up a weapons charge for having a 6" or larger fillet knife in your vehicle (witch I do through the summer). a CCW covers that knife as well as your firearm.

Certainly a subjective question and the answer is made by each individual who chooses to carry, or not.

So, if I'm in a situation where there is an active shooter threat ( or an active knife threat ), do I stand there with my thumb up my rear and hope the police can show up and engage the person before the shooter gets to me ? - or do I carry and in the same situation try to stop the threat ?

This is the big question and answer. I will only engage an active threat that threatens others and/or myself - period. If I observe a robbery......as long as no one is threatened they can have the money.

They have insurance for that, what is your life worth or your families lives worth? Get the training and the insurance that makes it hard for them to win.

insurance is a smart move. its a real shame we need it though.

Do you know of anyone who had to use the insurance? How well were they defended and what was the outcome?

What good is your $ if your dead or have to live with the shame of seeing others killed and being unable to help?

$ is not the most important thing in life although many folks surly think it is.

Good question. There are several organizations that offer the insurance including the NRA. However, the NRA insurance only covers firearms. I was thinking of USCCA which covers other weapons including knives. But like you, I would like to hear how well somebody was defended with these inurance plans. USCCA has a video on a person that had to use their plan but then again it it is for advertisement purposes.

At the concealed carry class I took, they said to be prepared for a lawsuit, even if it was deemed that you acted appropriately.

CCW in some states also gives you more leeway on how you can transport firearms in your vehicle...really handy come trapping season.

Better to be alive and have to worry about it than dead and not able to help your family.

Bottom line is we have lost too much liberty. Enough is enough. Free people don't need permission to be armed. Free people don't need to worry about whether or not their firearm complies with some politicians idea of what they "need". Lawsuits against somebody cleared by the court as acting lawfully should not be allowed.

None of that is likely anytime soon. Insurance is a good idea.
