Loebnier (sp?) magnolia . you might take a look at a star magnolia since they tend to be a little more cold hardy .

Thought Dogwoods only had 4 pedals to their flowers.

Type in Northern Magnolia and I believe you will find your tree. First thought it was a False Dogwood or Mock Orange but not the same bloom. Southern Magnolia has heavy dark leaves with a bloom almost a foot wide and our Mt. Magnolia has huge leaves that come on first with a bloom over a foot wide that come on later in the spring. The one I got still has not bloom this spring. Both tree are very beautiful but not sure where all they will live.

City of Olathe KS (Kansas City) has a bunch of them planted in the median on Lone Elm street. All bloomed out right now. Drive by with the window down it smells a lot like the magnolia in the S.E. part of the country. More bush than tree though unlike in the S.E. and they have smaller flowers. I've no clue what its actually called.

Its Magnolia stellata- or Star Magnolia- one of the earliest blooming magnolias- often the blossoms are susceptible to frost. Small Hardy often multi stem or short and wide deciduous flowering tree. Should be easy to find at the garden center- just ask for star magnolia.

Magnola where I live have large leaves. I have seen one mutated dogwood with double blooms in NC.
