Hey guys. First time posting, just got vetted for membership, but I’ve been following for a few weeks now. I live in Southwest Ga and have hardly any trapping experience except doing a little trapping as a teenager. To be honest, trapping hasn’t crossed my mind in the last 35 years..
I have access to an unnamed private plantation where I hunt, fish occasionally, and help out when needed. Nothing major on the helping, feeding dogs, helping with burns, helping a little on the hunts, etc. I was recently approached my thr plantation manager telling me I need another hobby...trapping. Apparently the trapper he had been using had gotten a little too big for the smaller plantation. (2700ac) I was very honest and explained I had no equipment or even trapped since I was about 15. He said no problem, they’d buy whatever I need and the best way to learn is to do it.
Well, I’m a prideful person and bought all my own equipment after reading this site and watching umpteen hundred videos. I told him once I get back into the swing of things they could purchase whatever else I might need. Unfortunately in Georgia the only thing open to trap is the ole coyote. Think we had only ever caught one back in my early years, with Fox, coons, and the occasional bobcat making up the most of our catches.
So I get my supplies in and get my traps ready and make my sets. The only thing I knew really was the dirt hole so that what I did. For almost a week and a half...nothing. I would get on here every day and night reading posts about coyotes. Even went to the archives reading everything I could find. And as most know, there is NO one way is the only way. I’m the type that takes everything in and applies it as the need or situation arises.
I soon figured out that baits only attract ants. Lures do just about the same. So then I got reading about Urine and ordered that. That didn’t work either, although I was seeing tracks in my set, just not on my pan! And I guess you can tell if I was seeing that then I was checking them way too often and way to close.
So I left them alone for 3 days just doing a drive by and making sure nothing had been tripped. And Saturday morning I made my first coyote catch in probably 35 years!! To say I was ecstatic was an understatement!! And it came on a set I was planning on moving, lol!
I’m a sponge right now for info. I did notice this particular set was in the wide open near a hill so to speak and most of my other are nestled up against brush with limited visibility. And my sets are all along roads where there are tracks, scat, or the manager has pics of them walking.
Anyways, just wanted to say thanks to everyone that’s contributed to my first catch!! I realize what works for some my not work for all, but you never know what may work for you until you try it!
