Other than trench, flat, and dirt hole, what kind of sets do you guys make for coyote? I want to try something new this season for the fun of it
Trapping is easy you say? You try getting your target animal to step in a 3 inch area of its whole territory.

we set good locations with 2-3 sets. one is always a post set and post sets account for almost half of our catches easily. Dirthole sets (and we use a lot of double dirtholes), and flat sets. For change-ups we do use trench sets and some unique variation of a flat set like a big plug of sod (sometimes we stack two up to get the visibility factor) or a rock, maybe a pop can, and a wad of grass wired to end of a stick with lure on the grasswad is good too. In late winter when ground is rock solid and we are making sets in corn stubble along weedy draws and ponds...a simple bent over stalk with lure in end of the stalk and trap bedded below the lured end has taken a lot of coyotes for us. trash pile sets work very well in late winter, too. eye appeal, and place to hide bait and lure under the edge of the pile. I like those in bean fields where there are typically a few of such piles already in the field from combine chaffe piles. good place for mice to hide and feed in late winter, coyotes check them out readily. we also snare a lot of trails, frozen creek beds, and ditch crossings in late winter. snares are very good late season sets. Jim
Money cannot buy you happiness, but it can buy you a trapping license and that's pretty close.

Walk through sets. Find or make a spot where they will walk through. Then with a trap stake just punch In a hole On each side of that walk through. They can be exactly opposite of one another. Use 2 different smells this will get that coyote to slow down to check out these odors. This works good on those trails. You want that critter to slow down and move It's feet around a bit instead of just lumbering down the trail. Keep It as natural looking as you can.

2-trap blind trail set with stick between traps. Bed and cover traps as in Zagger's Pipe Dream Set. Weather resistant. Worked well for me this past season - reused trap beds by putting traps on drags. I just threw drags aside and sparsely covered a foot or two of chain with grass.

Compass set, basically a flat set with 4 lures, one in each corner trap in the middle. I use this one, like it a lot

Never tried It but looks like It might work. It gets them moving their feet a lot to check out each lure. The more they move their feet the better.

There's only 3 set types. Blind trail, and sets with holes and sets without holes but, the variations are endless.

Same ol stuff over and over again. I guess if the OP really is bored he could try to catch some coyotes with exposed sets, that would keep him busy.

If you can find a mound of dirt... or make a few with a skid steer or loader.... that is a unique way to catch a yote, fox or bobcat. Works best if there is some ground cover. Don't know why but I suspect those critters will get on that mound for a better view of the surroundings, Also put a trap under something hanging from a tree branch, along a field edge. . A plastic bag, shiny tin... etc. Something to catch the critters eye and curiosity. I have caught a cat or two under small shiny wind chimes before. Guess it's true what they say... "curiosity killed the cat" These are not high number catch sets, but I have caught critters in sets like these. I guess they can be called fun sets.... kinda fun, if they work!!

Post the picture TJ. Multiple catches are always cool to see. Not my picture, but it was on this site a couple times. Said a part time trapper from Indiana did it. Only eight visible in this and it's the only view I can find. But it makes me want to give up on fancy sets? Amazing !

post sets work well here. They are pretty much a flat set but the scent it on something. Staked hide set is good. Ive tried these, can't seem to catch a thing with it

Staked hide set is one of my favorites. Exposed animal parts are illegal here so I lure the hide and stake it like you would anywhere else then cover it with dirt. They find it. I like to use front feet of fox or coyote. Deer hide works good too. Dry it out so it is hard and tough. Post sets can be urine posts, scent posts, they can be a rock or stick or cornstalk. Set them like a flat set and out the trap down wind. We have a lot of corn so I pick the stalk that sticks out the most and put urine on it. Sometimes I put a lure at the base- sometimes I wipe call lure about 10'' off the ground. A coyote can see the stalk that sticks out more than the others and they head for that to see if anyone else marked it.

Well I ain't a big #s catcher but I knew this past season was going too be tough.I had to wait until Deer season was over man did that kill me.Rock hard ground blowing snow I had both Fox and yotes walk up to or over my sets.I got 2 fox and 1 yote but it was the best looking yote I have ever got looked like the ones they get out west silver and the white belly she fell to a pipe dream set in the field behind my house.I was trying too plow my driveway and I see this yote in my trap and a guy coming to it.He tells me you can't use snares in NY.I told him no kidding it's a MB650 and legal. Then he tells me his wife called the DEC I said no problem I got a 24hr check they never came. And I don't know wat it is but every couple weeks a yote will come right outside my house and howl and bark.I use too throw scraps in the weeds but the yotes started eating my chickens so that stopped.

Here is the runway toilet set. 2 traps in a trail with bobcat scat and urine on both sides of the trail. Red dots = pans I used a dead branch to make the animal step over the jaws and onto the pans. I had a coyote on this set the next day. For you folks that see this and don't clink the above link this is an example of why I'm asking for pics of your sets.

For you guys that need to kill a or coyoyes around calving time,,, Straw a bunch to make pattern then using afterbirth the liquid once in 5 gallon bucket pour into the straw set to traps on a drag covered by straw. Will catch about every coyote snow rain sleet. A bit different from the hay set but same principle,,, Disclaimer this set has been around a long long time. And the only time I use this set is when cows are calving.

I read about and use a “Lethal Texan Set” sometime.
Punch hole at base of backing and shove a large cotton ball down saturated with urine. Bed trap out in front.
Sit with warriors. The conversation is different.
