Found motionless on my outside porch early this morning parked on my camera tripod. It is about 1.5 inch in total vertical length - can't find it in my insect guide references.

Found in the morning, it is usually a moth. But without seeing the antanas I don't know for sure.
I would call it an Illuminati moth.
It is a beauty.

After catching this specimen and cooling it overnight in the frig, and with my best effort, it keyed out to be an Eastern Tent Moth. I will be hunting for the larval caterpillars around the fruit trees in the area that haven't been sprayed.

Did this Robin find a Tent Moth caterpillar in the grass tonight? Had to use the flash for this photo because it was too dark to see what it nabbed.

Wow, Jonathan, the flash sure puts a different feel to an image ! With that slight outline shadow , almost looks like it had been cut out from paper and propped up in the lawn grin

Glad they can benefit from those worms .

I'd suggest you look a little closer, I am pretty sure it's a Herald Moth (look at a nearly identical specimen at my link above) and not a tent caterpillar moth.

Not saying you won't find your tent caterpillars, but I don't think your moth with the orange accents will be involved.

E.Shell,

Thank you for that correction and ID confirmation! There is no doubt that it is a Herald Moth.

Kind regards,

Jonathan
