I have been reading a fair number of posts around catching cubs then using them to lure mom in. Seems to be very logical and would be highly effective. My curiosity is around the type of set used for this? Small cage secured inside larger? Stacked box traps? Any thoughts are appreciated.

Small cage on the back of a regular coon trap.

Thanks Jim. That is what I suspected all are using.

I have heard of the mother coon trying to get the baby coon out of the trap and killing it in the process. Trying to pull it through a one inch square. Like they pull blankets, tarps, rugs and sod into a trap. Something most customers may not want to experience.

ponyboy, once you've seen it, it is probably not something that you want to experience again! There is nothing more ferocious than Mrs. Raccoon around her babies. We keep them as far apart as possible.

Paul, I never use the set. Also it may not be legal in my State because a trapped animal must be removed from a trap within so many hours. I agree with your keeping Mrs. Raccoon away from the caged babies.

That is a lot of unnecessary work IMO. Not only that but if the cage is located ground level and a homeowner or child wanders over near the trap and mamma's lurking, it could become problematic. They will hang around and that's something you want to avoid if possible, especially if there are children around.

Very good point TDHP. Interesting also regarding Mrs. Raccoon killing baby in the process I had not heard that prior. Do agree that doing anything to remove the problem, even if that just results in Mrs. leaving the area is a win for both customer and us.

Agreed, and you can accomplish the same method by simply using the same cage you trapped the kits in. The amount of urine/odor/scent with fur will be plenty to get mamma into that cage. Biggest take away here is not to complicate trapping mamma. Have confidence in what you're doing and you will eventually realize how easy it really is. It's just an animal.
