Still have some fat on yesterday's coons. Should I just try to clean it off when they're fully dry, or leave it? I don't want to over flesh. Thanks.

If you are going to sell them right away,you can let a bit of fat dry on them.If you are going to hold them,or otherwise think they may take a while to sell, make sure they are grease free.

Do the job correctly the first time. It's always harder to get that fat off later.

First time fleshing. White fat on white leather was hard to see, and without someone local to coach me, I'm doing the best I can while trying not to over flesh.

I know where your coming from. But It's better to do the touch up before you get scabbed over fat pockets. If you hang your coon from the tail end of your stretcher most of that surface fat will just run off and drip off the nose. Hanging them from the nose will have that fat running off and building up on the skirt fur.
Aren't there any fur buyers In your area? If you can find someone I'm sure they could help you out.

How does a person know if they've over fleshed?

Check your beam for fur.

Some critters are prone to being over fleshed. Rats are one and early coon are another and It's just about impossible to not over flesh grinners.

If you start seeing the roots your over fleshing. Early skins are more prone to over fleshing then late caught hides.
I don't think you can over flesh a beaver.

AJE, when you have over fleshed a pelt you'll see hair coming out of the leather side.
For me it happens while I'm fleshing raccoons & the occasional coyote that has rather grizzled fat or that's how I call it.
As for a final touch up on raccoons once again I use a Swedish hoof knife and some saw dust and wipe them down with a rag and repeat if needed.

After fleshing just wash in a bucket of dawn dish soap and rinse. Use those rags to buff the leather dry
Gets all the blood and dirt missed and degrees's as well. Just dry with a fan the fur before boarding.

yes but be careful on foxes the leather drys fast it will dry way before the fur does! Most of the others dry pretty uniformly . On rats just give them a quick shake in the water as you remove them from the trap same with beavers! yotes and coons will be your biggest dirt collectors. I wash skunks reguardless of being dirty I feel it brightens up their stripes along with removing the stinch
