All my coons under 2XL sold poorly last year. This year I plan on releasing the smaller coons, is there a way of sizing up a coon to tell if it will go under 2XL ? Other than the obvious young of the year coons , how can you tell the middle sized L and 1XL coons apart from the slightly bigger 2XL coons ? If at all ? -Thanks

I am in the same boat with you!!! I run almost exclusively dogproof traps for coon. I cherry pick and only take the largest best coon. I release all others. (No value for a small Mississippi coon) The bigger boars are of course obvious. If I have one in question I like to stretch them out in the catch area and look at the rump area. Seems in MS if they are heavy in the rump area and up the back they are gonna go XXL or better. If I am still "iffy" I'll turn them loose and let them roll on another season. Where I see it difficult to judge size sometimes is in cages if Im trapping them near the house. Just my 2 cents.

Lots of nice coon sold poorly over the last year or so. My best 3X (select) didn’t sell but my 4X with crummy SE Minnesota yellow coloration and being early to boot sold well. I think what will happen is we’ll see movement via private treaty sales thru NAFA on the nicer stuff. Hang in there, your stuff will sell one of these days and you might be surprised at how well it did too

if I got caught releasing a coon of any size I would prolly not be able to ever release another one on that property. would prolly be my last day there.

X3, it's part off our job to manage coon populations, for crop damage, depradation and desease control..

Common sense catches alot of fur..
Pay homage to all you harvest..

Depends on the type of coon you have, around here a 3x will be around 14#

Only way I do it is on the stretcher...

Seriously, unless it's a baby, all my coon up here make 3X or bigger. And I don't release any of them. I agree with the statements about managing and controlling the population.

Coon around here are referred to as rats with hairy tails! Farmers don’t want them released no matter what size they are.
