Happened to catch this one on film early this morning nabbing a dragonfly for breakfast.

Good shot. I used to see them on the river at my parents when I was younger. Now it's just the grey herons or the whit ones, egrets?

Wonderful! Never could understand where they got the "green" in Green Heron.

Great shot, Jonathan!

A few years back I was going with a woman who lived across the street from a nice sized swamp and she had a Green heron nest along the wood's edge of her back yard. One day we were floating around on rafts in her pool and watching as the three young herons flapped their wings and jumped around on the edge of the nest. We were both excited, knowing they were ready for their first flight. Suddenly, with interlaced wings, two of them came downward in an out of control spiral. I quickly jumped out of the pool to investigate and was soon sad to find that one had hit a branch on it's way down and broke it's neck. It died within the minute or so it took for it's sibling to climb halfway back up the tree.
