I have seen less than a handful in my area over the past several years, and was able to catch one stopped long enough for a couple of photos after it landed in my sister's flower garden in June 2011!

My long spell without seeing any camera hunting since ended this afternoon when I saw one briefly feeding on a few day lily flowers next to Lake Ontario where I live. These are my best shots of a loner I was able to get before it took off on the wind.

You should come here in mid August some years there are literally hundreds gathered around puddles in the road after a rain

You are so lucky to have two generations a year!
Swallowtails are so difficult to identify with so many sub species

Jonathan,

I believe the butterfly in your very first picture is a Giant Swallowtail not a Tiger Swallowtail. The next 3 pics are definitely Tiger Swallowtails.

CH, I only have these other views of that individual. Are they detailed enough to call it a Giant Swallowtail?

Jonathan,
You are welcome. Don't see many of them around here any more. Always enjoyed seeing them and the Zebra Swallowtails.

Savell,

They aren't venomous but they are big enough to carry a full grown man away. LOL

Well I guess I should ask about this one. Looks like Johnathan's to me but I found it here in Idaho at 6500 feet while scouting elk. Some other version?

10bands, I found this with a net search.

"Western Tiger Swallowtail (Papilio rutulus)
The Western Tiger Swallowtail is a common butterfly in the Western U.S., closely resembling its counterpart, the Eastern Tiger Swallowtail."

10bands,

Tiger Swallowtails have different color variations. Some females are all black with blue spots. I believe the butterfly in your picture is a different color variation of a Tiger Swallowtail. Not 100% sure but I think so.
