What set do you catch the most bobcats on? And what lure/urine/bait seems to work the best for you?

Dirt hole(big holes), walk thru. With cats, keep it simple. Not trap shy and not hard to lure. Use bird wings and or old cd's on a string, or x-mas tinsel. If you are trapping ground where you have permission for years to come. Start building a few cubbies, the sooner the better. let them age a little, cats love woodpiles and cubbies near thickets.
1.5,1.75 and #2's all work. I prefer the #2's in case a yote comes by. And use a catch pole for dispatch. No mess. Nothing but clean fur.
Remember, cats hunt mostly with their eyes. And don't give too quickly, cats have a large home range, may take several days for the cat to complete its rounds. the south has an abundance of cats, their fur isn't the greatest, but easy to skin and put up. Also the taxi market likes whole specimens for body mounts. Hope this hopes. Sarge

Thank you sir. Yes, I’m trapping a plantation and plan on it as long as the manager remains the manager and he ain’t planning on going anywhere. And he hates cats more than coyotes.
Now I’m going to show my in experience, how high do you hang the attractiors and what exactly are cubbies?

Hang with fishing line or string, about 3 feet above ground behind the set. You want the cat to have to cross your set first.
Cubby, think of an open ended box, but made out of natural items, logs, limbs, leaves, etc. I'm sure being a plantation there should be lots of items to make cubbies But do so that farm equipment will not run over them. On the edges of clear cuts and logging trials that the cat can see for a good distance. Cats are curious, will go a long way to investigate, plus a little lure doesn't hurt for when he gets close enough for his nose to take over. Sarge

To make your time spent trapping, enjoyable, and productive, I have some suggestions for you.

Wanting to become a trapper is a wonderful thing. You will find that there is so much to learn, and always room to grow. You will spend more time outdoors and get plenty of great exercise.
You will meet some great people and have a hobby or avocation that will last a life time if it is meant to be.
There is more to trapping than one might first think. Tons to learn just to get started.
First, join the state trapping association and attend some conventions and or workshops where demonstrations on trapping may get you on the right path.

Another thing to do if you want to jump start your education is look for some good books and DVDs.
Rick Olson has an excellent book on bobcat trapping. Yes it is written by a guy from Minnesota but it has a ton of transferable info.
Carl Jones has a real nice cat trapping book. There are lot of books but these two come to mind and they have a solid not baloney approach.

DVDs, my there are lots. Ones that come to mind that may be good for a being trapper and that can translate to your area:
I found good info in all of the ones mentioned. There may be lots more that I have not seen.

Mike McMurry has a good one
Bobcat trapping by James Lord
Cat trapping by Mike Bailey
J.C. Conner has a good one on cats.
Ray Milligan has a good one.
Steve Wood has a series of good ones.
Good old Matt Jones has a combo cat and coyote DVD
Mark June has a darn good one.
Others worth mention are Gary Jepson's and Johnny Thorpe's,

Good luck to you. As you can see from your first replies you will find some nice guys on here that will jump in and help if they can.

I seem to have a horseshoe up my butt with bobcats. First year I started trapping caught a handful. I don’t trap to make a living, I just do it for fun an I CANNOT stand coyotes. Anyways I didn’t do anything special, just made some blind sets on trails an it seems to work for me. Honestly didn’t even know bobcats were around my area was trapping. The next year I studied a lil an tried some new sets an caught a lot more cats than coyotes. Again nothing special just set on trails or intersecting trails. I will be honest tried the feather on a string...never worked for me had cats walk by it an never mess with it. So took it down. Sooo if I’m gonna catch a cat it will be on Zagmans compass set or a post set. Seems like that’s what works for me.
With that said I use sevenoaks trapping lures. It’s what I started with an seems to work well for me. They seem to like his beav-r-cat an his flats an post lures. Granted could be luck but my buddy traps with me an hadn’t caught a cat yet. He uses all kinds of lures. Took last year off for some surgery an didn’t trap any. So we’ll see how it goes this year. Trail cameras are looking promising for more cats.
Call John at sevenoaks he’ll help you out a ton. He’s got great info an doesn’t mind sharing it either

Mac made a great post.

I have caught most of my cats in sets targeting cats in double dirt holes with lots of eye appeal and trench type sets kind of like what Clint Locklear shows on his Cat Collector DVD.

I have probably caught more cats with blind sets on otter and beaver crossovers than anything else.

Just watched Clint Locklear's Cat Collector DVD. I haven't got a chance to put his information to the test but his formula for catching 100s of cats makes a lot of since. I think anyone who wants to catch cats should watch it. Personally I've caught most of mine blind setting but I'll guarantee I'm going try his methods next year.

What part of western NC are you in? This will be my first year on the line and I’m trying to soak up as much as I can. Already been in touch w Mr. John and he’s given me some great feedback. I’m in Yancey County. Burnsville 28714. Thanks:

I prefer snares or cubbies.

If it makes a track on this earth , I can catch it.
