Title says it all, anyone ever tried a deer's tarsal or metatarsal for coyote? Either fresh or rotted down into a gland lure. Coyote eat deer, so logically it should be somewhat effective. Don't deer also have some sort of gland in between their hooves? Trying them together or separate could be an interesting experiment.

The one between the hooves is the inter digital gland. I tried making inter digital and preorbital(gland near the eye) lures in the past for archery hunting. It takes a lot of deer to make a little.
As far as for yotes, all that stuff gets buried in the bait pit with everything else.
That's just my experience.

I would think you would attract more deer than yotes. But hey ya never know.. Soak some in everclear to make a tincture.

Common sense catches alot of fur..
Pay homage to all you harvest..

I have some tarsal gland cooking in Everclear at the moment. I will give it a shot come trapping season.

I soaked some in everclear from last yr. Going to try it this yr. I added some to a food based lure for my first formulation with it. I liked what it did for the odor of the lure but what I think doesn't mean much to the coyotes. I'll put it out with some cameras here in the next week or two.

If y'all would report back to this thread with your results or start a new thread that'd be awesome. I'm gonna get in touch with all the hunters I know and get them to saving the glands for me this fall and winter. Be cool to see results from around the country.

It is a very good food ingredient for canines and cats both. Not real high on it as a single ingredient lure.

I have to admit. Not a fan of tincturing in alcohol either. I moisten them up with a little bit of water and rot them down. After about a year I grind and preserve. Just my experience. Not saying other ways are wrong.

Thanks for the input Andy. I appreciate it when guys with experience are willing to share with us beginners. Especially when it comes to lure making.

Just for curiosity sake, why not tincture in alcohol? Does it affect the smell?

If fresh deer smell is what your after by all means tincture in alcohol. I never said to don't do it. I said I'm not a fan of it.

I have thoroughly dried coyote "tarsal glands" aka the foot pads before.... ground them up and used them in a few different ways at sets. Got the idea from an old gov't trapper....he used to grind the dried pads and sprinkle them at some of his post sets.
I like to dry them and then either add glycerine to them or use them in the powder form....definitely different.

I have experimented with them several timesas a single attractor and find their attraction to fox, coyote and bobcat only marginal

Hawbaker's fox book had a formula that involved deer brains, the tarsal glands, finely shaved hooves, and various other components.

I spend a lot of time trying to keep deer away from my sets or sets away from deer. There are thousands of attractors to choose from to attract coyotes.Known deer attractors are at the bottom of my list when after coyotes, especially when trapping during Nov-Dec.

What did it say? I'm not smart enough to find it.

I've been testing lure here for about 3 weeks now and honestly haven't found one that the deer haven't showed an interest in. Kind of had same experience when trapping. If I'm in the woods with the deer in going to get sprung traps no matter which lure I use.
