Mink, i'd love to see a photo of how your X is set up. My experience has been deer will duck under and coyotes will go around. Always willing to learn.

I realize it is an old post, but here if you put duck sticks or fence in over a snare you will catch whitetails. Mule deer will go over or around almost always, moose will just push through unless you are using very stout blocking, and elk will push through, go over, or go around, but here whitetails will duck under anything over knee high almost every time. They might go over or around a coyote snare if you are very careful and make sure your duck sticks aren't over 16-18" high, but that is going to spook quite a few coyotes unless it was something preexisting like an already existing blowdown log. As far as wolves are concerned, they aren't that much shorter than whitetails and whitetails tend to go through the brush with their head held down as low or lower than a wolf head. If you are setting snares for wolves anywhere whitetails travel you are going to catch every whitetail that comes through. I don't set wolf snares until the snow gets deep and pushes the deer down, then I will set them where the deer aren't.

Let me state that is in North Idaho, in other areas of the country whitetails may very well act differently, but here they are used to ducking through and under brush, the canines will avoid your sets for overfencing long before the whitetails do. You even have to be careful around farm fields and snaring where coyotes go under the fences, some of them places where the bottom wire is 16-18" off the ground the deer, at least the smaller does and yearlings will duck under rather than go over.

I will be glad to show you my set Dean. Remind me this fall and I will send you pictures. It's not over fencing by no means, it looks as Natural as you can imagine. Evergreen Branches and a couple tall sticks [approx 4 ft] with limbs in a X Over my Killer Stake and snare to get the deer to go around. 54 years old and have never caught a Deer, knock on wood! It is a Coyote killer.

Gotta look close for gator sign at crossovers here...b4 setting beaver snares, 280s, and 330s. Yep a 280 Belisle will kill a 6 foot gator. A Belisle 330 will kill a 9 foot gator. Lethal head strikes.

Also, real fun to cut a snare off a live 6 to 7 foot plus gator to release it...by yourself.

Have to be careful with sets made near beaver lodges, channels leading away, and main dam. This is where deepest water usually is and where the gators hang out, especially in warmer months. An MB750 will hold a good sized gator by the front foot. He wont drown.

Jeff: Good to see you sharing info again. ADC folks that work on or near water during the warm months but don’t have hogs, gators and cottonmouths to contend with should be thankful. Last week, we took (legally) an overly curious alligator from a body of water I was working that was only 4 inches shorter than my pirogue, which is 10 ft 6 in. Swamp Wolf is right, releasing a gator from either a conibear or snare is more fun than one person should enjoy by themselves, so I usually try to share it with someone I trust to do their part. Happens about once a year on average, and I usually call one of our Game Wardens first because they know the drill and have places to relocate to so I don’t have to mess with it again. Best practice is to avoid catching a gator if possible, and the suggestions made by folks earlier help, but sometimes stuff just happens!

Left lane, my experience has been that when hog numbers are HIGH, the deer will be scarce in the core areas. They may still see deer in the area, but it will be away from the hog’s core area. A person knows when they’re dealing with serious hog numbers. Once the numbers are more reasonable (thinned population/scattered), deer and hogs will mingle more. This means seeing more tracks and evidence of browsing.

I've seen deer go under fences at a dead run with the hounds on their heels.

I'll add that many times you can smell that fishy musk odor if a gator is using a grassy crossover or crawlout and you can't see tracks, etc.

Once you smell it, you will know that odor.

I was setting a beaver job this week and passed on this cross over.

The only sure fire way to keep deer out of snares is to not set trails the deer are using.

Period.

And “jump sticks” more often than not, in reality, become “dive sticks”.
