I think I read about this somewhere....maybe I'm imagining it....has anybody ever tried baiting a fence post hole with a groundhog under a post in the summer, then removing the post and setting a trap during the season? Any luck with it? The bait would rot down good over a few months and should be a good attractant. Just wonder if something would dig it up in the meantime. Please share results if you have tried this!

Sounds like a good set if you have a loose post in the right spot. Probably better to set up right away with a tainted bait.

Sounds like a baited set I use for snares. bury the ground hogs 2 or 3 in a hole in a high grass area. set the trails 30 yards or more back when season starts. I am putting them in now till sept. The season starts Nov.

I tried a fence post set once. Read about it in Del Kramers book, I think. Took a fence post= drill or bored some 2 inch holes in it. Used BT-45 auger . Dug hole ,when I finish, put 4x6 fence post in hole. The holes I drilled were at 12 inch high and 18 inch high, put bacon grease in one hole, fish oil in other. Bed trap = bout 12 inchs back. I put this next to gap , where cattle gate was open, looked natural. caught coyote 3 days latter .

Well....I wouldn't propose running a long line like this but on my property it's pretty simple: I have plenty of old posts, it takes very few minutes to punch in the post hole, and I'm not throwing 4-5 groundhogs in the freezer for the next several months waiting for the season. Also, ground hog holes on my property are up in thick cover and not in ideal places to set traps....I guess they figured best not to put their houses on coyote travel corridors laugh

I don't normally put more than one trap on a set but with a loud bait like this I would do three traps to the set on drags. My biggest concern is whether the bait would get dug out around the posts before the post is removed.

Anyway I know I did not conceive of this....but can't remember whose idea this was. In one of Matt Jones' videos? Put on here years ago?

My take....I'm sure you know already but....there is a set called the post hole set. I first read about it from a trapping book written in the 1940s. Basically dig a hole very similar to a post hole except not as far down....about 12 inches. Next....using a disposable stake...anchor your trap....you'll quickly see why the disposable is best here...then bed your trap usually a strong coilspring due to hole construction. Then...about two inches or so above your trap take a screw driver and punch out a hole for your lure. Apply your attractor in the hole(s) and you're done.
