Just curious as that is somewhat still my business. Has there already been hay put up there or is most of it still uncut ?What about the barley ? Is it mostly combined or cut for hay.I am still covered in grease and sweat trying to get my little dab of haying done (splitting my tractor for a clutch job )

I'm guessing they get 2 cuttings of hay. From when I was running around there in '13&14 bison hunting, there was only one family growing barley.

Thanks martentrapper ,I met a guy in Helena years back that won some lottery type drawing that he got to buy a large chunk of that land and he cleared several sections and got it seeded then he was stricken with a very serious disease (he was in a wheelchair and could barely talk to me )I think his brother carried on for a time farming it.I think he said it was wooded with quakies and spruce and they used some big cats to clear it .Hope you get a barley fed buff.

Inlaws have gotten 1 good cutting so far for hay, they also grow barley for their whiskey.

It's been a hard year to get hay up around here. Put 810 bales in the barn yesterday, first hay we've got up so far. Still have about 35 more acres to mow, but waiting on a good weather window to do it. Seems like the weather guessers are having a hard time predicting anything beyond about 24 hours.
We never get two cuttings here, but we are at about 1,400 ft elevation. People near here but at lower elevations do sometimes get two cuttings. We do pasture the second growth, sometimes up until the end of November .

Sorry about the clutch, hope you got her going again by now. Break downs during haying are a pain.

Are you haying for your own use, or haying for others?

It feeds my own horses and I sell enough to sometimes make a little play money. I always sell a horse or two and make a few bucks .If we do good on this hay I am going to buy some draft colts and get a team going again. I like raking with horses.

Thanks GS, we'll get it, but maybe not when we want to get it done. smile

When I was growing up I rode a lot of miles on one of them old dump rakes behind a Ford 9N. Barely big enough to reach the trip peddle, had to slide about half out of the seat to reach it, and then get back out of the way before the hand lift lever came winging by your head. lol. And now they call them the good old days .?? I guess you could say any day you didn't get hit in the back of the head by the hand lever was a good day.

Hope you do good on the hay, I want to see some pictures of your draft colts.
