I start at two inches as the rear of the wedge. Thirty eight inches long. Rip to zero at the opposite end. So it is a 38 inch long wedge.

Lots of guys make two keys(belly wedge)from the two trimmings from the sides of the stretching boards when they cut them out.

I made a jig to make my belly boards for my coon, fisher and fox boards. Then finished them up with a bench sander and some hand sanding.

Most any kind of stick will do. All it has to do is allow slack in the pelt when removed.

I do like Rendezvous, but, round over the edges with a router before ripping them on a tapper jig. No sanding to do.
