let them get caught a couple times, you will find out fast how smart or dumb it is.................

It took my lab a few times last year........ Only took him once with a snare though, after that he would lock up solid when he felt the wire and wait for me............

What late bite said.

Catch him.

I’ve had dogs I caught twice in their entire life. And dumb ones that seem to need a refresher every few months or so. I got a female right now that’s five that I caught twice at about nine months when she was first exposed to trap sets. She can work a dirt hole like a champ and knows exactly where to put her feet without getting caught. And if the holes not deep, she WILL get what’s down there. Even does it at natural holes.

Kind of an eye opener actually. Makes you appreciate dumb and smart coyotes.

My boston has landed in a 650C twice. She stays really close now when trapping. Just the way I like it.

I think it would be maybe train them before season with a lite trap just to get them to know to stay out of them .Set it like you would any set and let the dog get caught and then take it out and set it in a different place with different set up and see if the dog will do it again. You maybe see if it will learn or not.just to give a idea. That way with a lite trap it will be easy on the paw.Just thinking to see if this would work.

Hmmm. Just seems risky to let an expensive bird dog get caught in a trap. At least while he's just a pup. He's getting big quick though. I do have some small long springs that might not be too hard on him.

I've got a BMC gyp that I caught twice in Jake's this past winter, think it hurt her pride more than her foot. But she did learn to wait for me at fence crossings and where not to put her feet at a bait hole

Let em finish growing bone.

I dont expose mine till 9 months old or so when they’re more or less done growing.

Otherwise, you arent gonna hurt em. I haven’t had one take more than half a dozen gimpy steps.

You can do it with a young pup and I think it is even more effective the younger they are instead of a steel trap use mouse traps at the set then when the hey are older reinforce that training with a small trap like. Old no0 or 1 size

You lear real fast how smart the dog is by how they react lol le stayed above

My thought process was, since I have been using laminated OS traps I have not had a single break from any coyote or fox on a 24 hour check and that dog will learn fast when I tell him to stay and he doesn't. The one that seemed to seal the deal for him was a full pad catch on a KO-K9 Extreme........
