My father used an old mare for awhile trapping. Primarily because he couldn't walk far.
The first time he caught a fox, put it in a feed sack.
When he went to get on the horse, she wouldn't have anything to do with that.
Finally after a lot of coxing she let him on.

My family trapped off mules until the fur market tanked in the 80's. Much more efficient than walking. Of course that was also before they did away with all the open range around here.
I can remember like yesterday all the stock at large signs on the roads and all the cattle gaps on farm lanes and driveways.
Progress...meh.

We do some wolf trapping on horseback, not many roads in our area and the ones we do have are pretty heavily traveled by people that are not friendly to trapping. It's a nice way to do it but it takes a lot of time.

if your going to run a dozen traps one horse will work. if you want to run very many your going need a second animal. even with paniers you need something to protect the animals sides from hard odd shaped traps. easier to skin than haul out dead animals. nothing colder than being horseback in winter. I aint ever been anyplace in TX a pickup wouldn't work?

Sit on your horse on top of a ridge, look out across the country and tell me there is no God.

Fall of 1980. Slough Creek Montana. 20 mile pack on mules at hunting camp. Needed something to kill time when we weren't hunting. Trapped about 20 coyotes. Was fun. Careful how you pack your stinky bait and lure. ;0) Awesome pic!
