Does anyone have one? I see in some distributors adds that these are fully functional traps. I called and spoke to another, who told me they don't come with a dog. Now I have no plans to set a bear trap in placement in an attempt to catch any living thing, but I would like to have any trap I own to be in working order. Anybody know anything about this trap, could they be set as they come from the factory?

Every Jim River trap I've seen has been complete - including the dog - and could be set and be fully functional.

Thanks for the information, just looking at them in a catalog, it looks like a good copy of a #6 Newhouse. Do you know how/or if it differs from the original, other then the pan designation, and the age?

I'm sure there are other differences, though nothing major IMO. Maybe things like the sharpness of the edges on the bottom piece,

There are forum members that are much more knowledgeable about Newhouse bear traps than I am. I'm sure they could point out the details.

For a person that wants a # 6 bear trap that looks fairly "authentic", the Jim River trap is much easier on the pocket book than an original # 6 Newhouse.
