Hey, how do you guys treat conibears? I usually use dye and wax but I’m looking to try something different this year. Any ideas are appreciated. Thanks

I spray paint mine. Good coat of primer followed with a good paint. Gives me something to piddle with on these hot Summer days. I do my 330's every 2 or 3 seasons.

I waxed mine one time. Did not like the result. Triggers were unreliable. Had to use a propane torch to clean the trigger and dog and an area on the jaw.

If new degrease, then dye or paint.

Spray painted ours camo. Dull flat light brown base, a couple swipes with flat dark brown and black after the light brown dried. Works great.

I have a dip that you add gas to it for the mix and that is all I do with the conibears. I did at one time many years ago dye and wax them and that is the end of that for how it was with that.

Spray painting Is such a pain In the butt and It's messy and you have lots of waste.
Go buy some acrylic latex paint. Mix It 1 part paint to 2 parts water stir well while dipping. Shake to remove excess and hang to dry. Dry In 5 or 6 hour. Oh did I mention CHEAP and It holds up well on body grip traps and trapped used In the water.

I bought some latex Barn & Fence paint from Farm & Fleet. It's the right color and holds up well.

Brown Formula One work very well grin The problem with spray paint is it doesn't cover inside the spring coils and the tight spots, dipping does..

I can't afford that high priced dip $20.00 a quart. LOL
I can buy a gallon of missed matched paint for about $8.00 a gallon.

Every season, a new record catch of possums for us. Some day we might start winning the battle.
Concentration? How about 22 in one quarter section last year. That's 1/2 mile by 1/2 mile, seriously.
Really not a fan of possums.

I dye a set amount of body grip traps every year, neutralize the acid with a baking soda dip, dry and then dip in either speed dip, formula 1, or full metal jacket. The dye and neutralizing stops the rust and the dip will then coat and last for several years of use. The coal tar dips (of Speed or Katz etc.) add a little lubrication to the trap surface but painting as mentioned will work also. Most animals caught in a BG trap don't "polish" the entire surface like one caught in a Foot trap, so most of the rubbed surface is where the spring eye moves along the jaws (like a foot trap). Just no critter working on the entire surface like a coon in a foot trap to require a yearly prep. My take. I have several videos of coons stopping at BG's on game cams, sniffing the entire frame and going around them so air any coating out well before you set. I also have videos of coons stopping, sniffing and raising up to go through a coyote snare set at a 10-12" bottom loop height with no coating on the snare so go figure. the mike

I degrease them and use them for a season or two to get them good and rusty then paint.

Brown FORMULA ONE sounds like the way to go. How much solution will a quart make up. Also is the left over reusable.
