What do you use?

Baits I use my own homemade

Lures mostly commercial ( just started experimenting with my own a couple seasons ago)

Just a informal poll

Every day is a gift from GOD, don't waste it!!

If they have plenty of food, give them something interesting to smell

Coon and beaver I use a few of my own concoctions but for canines almost exclusively use commercial stuff.

Been playing with my own stuff for a year now but until I have a tested and proven mix of my own I'll keep buying commercial lures and baits. But I'm close. I have learned unless you use a whole lot it's cheaper to buy it. I do it for the challenge.

My own baits, commercial lures. Coons are just incidental or for nuisance work.

baits my own for every critter I trap. I buy half a dozen commercial lures for k-9s and cats. But the more I experiment the more confidence im getting in my own stuff! Never attempted a food lure for beaver, as territorial as they are I cant see it being better! than a good castor base smell!

You can make your own coon bait pretty easily. For the money it's well worth buying commercial bait/lure or at least a bait solution for k9s. A lot of those ingredients most of us don't have access to...or the formulation knowledge and testing time to put in.

I use very little lure, mostly for beaver. With the price of castor nowadays at $90\lb for No.1 I buy beaver lure.

I get enough bladder urine from catches for my trapping needs, and I use some glands from trapped animals for "special occasions".

Coyote & Cats: Lure, urine, turds, blind sets. There's no shortage of foods out there. Catch them on their first visit, don't depend on them tramping around.

I have experimented with different baits for k9 but have the best luck with Teepee Creek. I make my own coon baits. I have made my own castor based beaver lure that also works great on coyotes and seems to attract deer too. Im going to continue to test the deer theory this fall with trail cams.

I make a few but I depend on well formulated lures from fine craftsmen, with access to high grade ingredients.

Had a guy tell me deer were attracted to bto as well!Which doesn't surprise me as curious as they are.

Are not commercial baits lures?

At what point in mixing ingredients and rotted fish or beaver with this and that does it turn from bait to lure?
So if by bait we mean fresh or tainted meat or fish or fruit, well I have used some in the past and found possums like it pretty good, so for many years used no bait.

I buy lures because to make them requires bigger batches than I would ever use. The last few years I have used a commercial "bait" sold by a friend.

My thoughts are if glands and musk is added to bait it becomes lure that tastes bad. Good bait for me is just preserved meat and fat aged or fresh that tastes good to them any way. There are some available commercially. If I want lure at a baited set I'll add it on site.

I'm not nocking bait with adds, they do work, just what my preference has evolved to from my own experience.

I use a mix of fresh chunks of beaver, muskrat and deer with about a pea size glob of "commercial bait" down the hole. Also whole fresh mice with nest or chunks of rabbit. My catch rate went up considerably when I switched to fresh natural baits and cut back on the stinky stuff. Just my experience , your mileage may vary.

Tasting good is an after effect if used down a hole.Unless the hole is too shallow. If they aren't caught before they can get what is at the bottom of the hole, there is serious trap placement issues.
