Who uses a dab of this straight and for what animals? Last time I used it in elbow sets the coon really liked it and when the water got up over it and went back down it smelled stronger than ever. Was wondering if anyone tried it on otter, cats or canines.

Well if you find it a little goes a long ways. I snatched up a gallon a couple years ago and wish I’d bought more while the getting was good.

Everything seems to be attracted to it. I have caught coons, coyotes, fox, cats, and otter in sets lured with it, and of course possums and skunks.

kytrapper, I see your from SE Ky. I bought some at the Ky fall fling a few years back from a fella that lives over around Somerset. I can't remember his name, but he goes by Cumberland on here. He hasn't been logged on here in near about 3 years. He had some good stuff, not sure if he is still rendering it or not. He and/or his momma was having some health issues the last time I talked with him, hopefully all is well. I would love to get my hands on some more. I tried making it last year, but lost the batch to maggots.

You got the same batch I did. I don’t think he’s making it anymore. He had some good stuff. Did you catch with it?

We all got it at the same place. Last I heard Cumberland was not making any oil. There are a few around that do make it but it is like black gold and sells as soon as it gets bottled if not before. I am down to my last quart or so and need to find some more.

looks like sudden valley supply has some. Do not have the slightest idea on quality though.

Thanks for the heads up about Sudden Valley. Price is about the norm for the oil, just wish they had a picture of it. The good stuff looks like tar and be just about as sticky. I like it as a change up especially when the rain starts to pour about mid season.

Grawe’s sells what they call catfish tar and I suspect it is very similar.

Similar, but spoonbill is in a class all by itself. The consistency and the stickiness is similar, but spoonbill has a smell that is very unique.

Anthony and KYtrapper, wasn't there a guy at the KY trappers meet I attended few years back that was selling spoonbill oil? Matt Jones told me to "get you sum" but I didn't. Matt swore by it.

Yessir I did. I used it for a base in a lure. I don't recall using it straight though. I bought a gallon I think. I probably have about a quart left.

Yep, Cumberland sold a truck load of spoony oil that day. I use it for lure formulation too, just worried I won't be able to get any when I need it. Unless you are by one of the river fish markets raw material for it is not easy to come by either.

I had a fella give me 3 last year. I "sealed" them up in a 55 gallon drum. Never dreamed the maggots would make it in there. Amazing little creatures that ruined my happy party!!!

Maggots are sneaky little buggers. I had a few get in some eggs I am culturing, but it was a small number and fruit flies at that so I was able to save it. I'm not sure what all parts they use for the oil. I know a couple guys who make it but they sell it quick, like a year before it even gets rendering. It just has such a unique smell, almost like it is not even a fish oil.

Most anything that eats meat likes the stuff.

Sounds like it should be worth more than the $90/gal that Carlis is asking. One or two catches would make it paid for and there'd be enough left to last a few years.
How many gallons of bait or lure will a gallon of fish oil make?
