I have one trap that I can't get the skunk smell out of. It has been sitting out in the elements since December and I have put it in a bucket of water several times and it still stinks. I only know this cause I just boiled it and it stunk up a couple of coon traps I had in the pot with it. It didn't smell bad when I put it in the pot but now it's really bad. Any tips I looked in the archives but couldn't find it. Thank ypu

I spray mine down with brake cleaner and do the same as Rick, or in direct sunlight.

I used the peroxide/baking soda/dish soap mix and sloshed my skunked traps around in a bucket. Smell was gone immediately.

Wire it off to a bridge and toss it into the flowing current...if you need it sooner than later.

Try some of Rickards "Skunk Buster" on it, is what I'd suggest!

Well I have boiled it about 3 times and left it in the sun all day. It still had a faint smell so I'm boiling again in washingsoda and it's the last trap to boil for the night. I hope it works. If not I'm going to find a safe bridge to put it under.

Also you might try washing and soaking it in baking soda! I use baking soda when I ship skunk essence to take away the smell!

buy a new trap. May be cheaper than trying all the other things and you will have it to use this year.

If they still made the kb traps I would buy several new ones. But that's not an option anymore. I will get this one clean even if it takes me till November.

Skunk recipe in a spray bottle and use a brush to work it all over.

I boil them separately in sani flush or lye.Have them cleaned of any dirt or mud first.

Soaking in water re-activates skunk.Ever smell skunked traps or sets, right after a rain?I've put them in a stream for 3 months and they smelled the same, coming out as they did going in.I have no time for that.Water doesn't neutralize the acids and other complex chemicals in skunk scent.

This muck is likely acid with decomposing vegetation, important to read "muck" not "water".
An old time skunk trapper told me (50 years ago) to bury them in a manure pile for a week or a slough in the muck.
Last one I had like that I reset in the same hole and caught a coyote the next day. I am not sure that skunk smell is a terrible thing? Did I read that it is added to lure?

Well 3 baths and 3 days in the direct sunlight and it still stinks. I was wondering if a bath in vinager would neturalize the smell ?

This is the only way that I know for sure, that works.
