Hi,
I've seen lots of guys making bait and they would stick a tube through the lid of the jar of bait and put the other end of the tube into another jar of bait or in an empty jar. What is the reason?

To allow gases to escape "venting", so yah buckets/jars dun go an explode on yah. If you allow the gas to go directly to water it wont smell as bad if you're venting in a confined /limited space indoors IE cellar etc.

You/we need a way for gas to escape that flies cannot get thru, to lay eggs, making maggots to ruin the bait.
The problem with putting the tube in water is, it evaporates and if you don't stay on top of it flies go thru the tube......some guys use glycol or glycerin, since we have that on hand already and it won't hardly evap.
I use air stones for aquariums epoxied in place after drilling a hole, 2 are like $1.50 at Wally World.
I love the screw on/off lids too. No more wrestling the lids off!!!!!!!!!!

That's good if you have those materials on hand, but personally I wouldn't waste the money on a product then on shipping when you can achieve the same end result with virtually an endless supply of water. If evaporation is the problem, I'd use a gallon jug. We vent directly out of the bucket to something similar to ^ but no stone, and don't have issues with flies/maggots entering the buckets. Try a few different methods, but I'd keep it straight forward, I don't believe critters will sit and turn down bait because it wasn't vented with stones, water, glycol or any other elaborate setup.

lol im cheaper yet I don't use a vent I use 5 gallon oil buckets with the rubber orings in the lid. as gas builds they burp and seal back up you will find dried up fly eggs around the lids but In 4 years ive yet to find a maggot. I strongly believe a fly egg needs two things to make it to maggot stage moisture and protein.

Word of caution I run a ring of 2" black tape at the seam for a guarantee. More so for critters than flys! Family members go in my shed periodically! And some how cant remember the door works opposite when leaving! And make 100% sure the lid has a rubber oring or all bets are off!

Oh! I just loosen the lids of my bait jars enough for the gas to escape!

Another benefit to doing it this way, is that you can see when the final product is done gassing off, when the bubbles stop...after fixing the bait.

I bought a 45 gallon tote from home Depot for 13$ and will be putting the buckets in the tote, after using air hose to vent the buckets into a jug of water.

I hope this will keep the flies out completely just in case the jug goes t
Dry or I don't have the best seal.

I saw the screw on lids in a pic above I might need to buy some of those.

That worked for me the first couple batches, used a couple layers of flannel shirt over drilled hole, per Nick Wyshinski's instruction, but a unknown critter(s) removed the flannel..on 2 bait buckets..TWICE....rat or mouse or who knows, and I lost 4 gal bait each time. Have not lost a batch since going to the air stones....and following NEW ADVICE from Bob Jameson....cept he puts his on the side at the top.
