Quick question about lure bases: What common based do a lot of you start with and how much do you use in a formula? Say im making 4 ounces how much of that would be base ad how much would it be gland/ other material? Ive been working on some of my own lures an some have been turning out pretty good (to my nose) im just curious if im using the correct ratios or am i using too much base, gland, etc.

My bases are what ever I want the main odor to be. If its say a coyote gland lure then coyote glands are my base, if it's a food lure then I use something like fermented egg or juice of tainted meat. Other side odors are added till I get desired odor balance. I try not to add anything that doesn't contribute a desired odor to the formulation unless it's to get a desired texture or for antifreeze purposes. And then it's in as small amounts as I can get by with. My opinion is anything that doesn't add a desired odor is just diluting the odor profile.

That's actually a very complicated answer. If your writing a story what letter do you start out with. First determine the species you desire to attract. Then figure out all the elements you want to bring to the table. Then find out if they play well together or just bully and take over! Then are you after a unique smell or duplicating a favorite? lol im a lot like yes sir on mine. Minus the fermented egg. I like a fish oil or other animal oil as my base for lures. Baits its almost always a meat.

Appreciate the answers guys. I’ve been using a bad as the main scent I’m going for. The whole oil base is where I was confused.
