Found an 18" hand swager at home cheepo. Anyone try it? Not looking to spend 200$ for a bench mount.
For a small number of snares or stakes that joker is perfect. If you start doing any numbers of them you may (I did) get sick of it. Sometimes trying to hold the ferrule and both handles is a trick but it definitely does the job.

IMHO a swagger is not needed to construct reliable snares. Just hammer your ferrules and stops and then cross punch them with a standard screw driver for extra security. I've done this for years and never had a failure, which I cannot say for swagger treated snares I have occasionally purchased. All you need for snare construction are a block of steel (railroad tie), hammer and standard screw driver.

I have been building extension cables and drowners just smashing with hammer.....do tell please.

You will never get a failure with hammered ferrels. At least I never have and I snare some brute animals. Had boughten wolf snares fail at the ferrels a couple times and so have others-crimped ferrels. I make the crosspunch on the end of the rail that I use as an anvil.

Forget that fear of gravity-get a little savagery in your life.

[/quote] Look at the second picture and you should see the mark across the ferule and stop made by the standard screw driver. On the edge of the iron block I have an inverted V welded on the edge for the propose of this cross punching of ferules.

I find i dont need the screwdriver to cross peen. I just pound flat then hit the ferrule with the edge of the hammer head.
