After asking this I remembered this coming up on a post earlier this year so I searched around and found it. https://trapperman.com/forum/ubbthreads.php/topics/6176517/2 When a person says ounces as a measurement are we talking weight or volume? I ask because I keep seeing 8-12oz as a measurement for SB and then in this post Paul says a cup. Which is 8oz volume. So if we are talking about volume I have plenty of SB for my bait if we are talking about weight then I need to order more.

I'm sure Andy, Paul, Bob, or Asa will chime in at some point and clarify for us. Not to belittle any knowledge the rest of you fine reformulators have I just don't know how many of you are bait makers, and your names. Lol

Measured in volume, not weight. The SB is in addition to what's already in my bait solution. I use the MP strictly as a mold inhibitor.

It should be the same as sodium benzoate,8 oz though one lure maker says 4 oz. I thought SB was 1 cup per gallon meat? (if not in the solution)

I think most folks have said that 1 cup per gallon is a good measurement. I used 1 cup SB and a 1/4 cup MP. Mixed it with a cup of warm water and added it to the gallons of meat after 4 days of tainting.
The beaver meat was probably a bit further than I had thought it should be. It was rising 4 inches in the bucket before I would stir, and was very strong. The bobcat meat was not as strong but was gray for the most part. A little pink left in there but it was ground and not chunked so it will be interesting to say the least
I plan on getting a half gallon of beaver liver and heart ground up to preserve it fresh.. I know the bobcats like fresh meat.

ken I doubt 4 days was to long for cats. especially after you stop the taint and let it age a few months. eventually all that methane and other gases will have escaped and that rotten odor changes. A bunch. It takes awhile though. I like to let bait I made this year sit till season after this before I start using it. it will work the first season pretty good. but always seemed to me it was better the second season.
