What has been your experiences with lure ingredients foaming when mixed?

I’m not talking expandaing like happens during the rotting process...what I’m describing is excessive foaming where the lure may double in volume.

I have seen it a few time and I think it happens with oils like fish oil when mixed with things like urine.

Have others run across this?

Urines will react very quickly when added to some formulas thinking that is what you want to do at the time. You better have another bucket handy to handle the over flow to pour it off or dip it off as it can happen very quickly.

Glycol can react in a similar fashion with some ingredients.

I keep a bottle of anti foaming agent handy when such things happen. The kind you use in spas and hot tubs etc. It will immediately deal with the action taking place. Only add as much as is needed and keep it handy in the shop like a fire extinguisher when needed.

When you begin to realize what is occurring you need to respond quickly as you may only have 30 seconds to a minute or less to figure out what you are going to do or it will boil over like your first science project putting baking soda in a cup of water. LOL

This time frame may be shorter if you already have a good volume of material in a container. I only mix in 5 gal buckets or larger but even with that volume it can get ahead of you quickly.

You described exactly what I’ve experienced Bob. Sounds like the best way to deal with it is to mix in bigger containers.

If adding urine or you need to add urine with the knowledge this will or may occur just add the defoamer to the batch when you add the urine. This will keep it controlled and will allow the chemical reaction to defuse as it begins.

I have found no adverse reaction to the adding of this material as the defoamer is essentially odor free at least the material that I use is. I believe it to be a silica type product.

The more you formulate and begin to work with various ingredients it is just like a chemistry class. Some things just happen and you get an education when it does occur. Just try to determine the active ingredients that have been used and you will be able to make notes to when making that batch as to what can or will happen.
