Mix some DPs at the same locations. I've had coyotes try and carry them off. They only add more smells. Also coon remakes are hot for coyotes here in K9 sets. Iv'e had quite a few coon/coyote doubles.
Common sense catches alot of fur.. Pay homage to all you harvest..

I do the same with dp traps along with k9. I also use some 1 1/2 dukes in the mix for coon that I centerd swiveled and base plated just in case i connect with a coyote J

When I trap for coyotes and know there is coon in the area. I do not use offset.I just use regular jaws. That way I get what ever there is there and not tie up the set after.I did had a coon one year did what the OP stated with offset trap and then I change it to a regular jaw and got the coon and no more problems after. When I know that I will only get coyotes in the area then I would use offset jaws.I run a mix line and take what ever there is.Set a snare for beaver and it is normal to get a coyote in the snare.

No here in our habitat any dirthole set may get a coon, coyote, fox, coyote, cat, skunk, possum, badger, you name it. We run a mixed line on purpose because of the variety. Each location gets coon, coyote, and mink sets. We try to set for each specifically on location but catjes get pretty mixed between coyote and coon. Had one post set two years ago that took two coon first two checks, then a possum, and about a week later it was good for two coyotes. One heck of a circle by then and had to swap out the "post" twice because other one was beyond saving. I've had no problem taking coyotes after coon catches, and vice versa. We found to set traps a little farther back from hole or post will take coyotes and hind foot most coon. Haven't had an issue with offsets on hind footed big boars at all. Prefer closed jaw traps myself for coyotes and coon, but we do own a lot of offsets and that is how we set them to take either species with few misses. Jim

Money cannot buy you happiness, but it can buy you a trapping license and that's pretty close.

I was always a fan of making sets for all available furbearers when targeting one or two main species. Its just not good line management to drive by fur without picking it up.Keep sets simple, not elaborate and you can add sets quickly and easily when the situation dictates.Never found that picking up all the extra fur hampered the harvest of the main target species in any way.Maybe just the way I roll.

Coon are as easy as finding their travelways. Personally I have lost very few coon in offsets. When using a #2, they are usually caught high enough its not an issue. Maybe if you have some of those super wide offsets, it might be. But, when trapping everything from mink to coyotes, I like a 1.75 regular jaw.
Right now I’m having amnesia and déjà vu at the same time. I think I’ve forgotten this before.

With 3/16th offsets I loose very few coon, the coon here arn't huge but larger than southern coon. 1/4 and over that's a different story. It's got alot to do with good swivels and enough chain to give em more freedom.

When you use regular jaws you will get what ever there is there and you can count on the one check to help with gas money. Also with more then one set in a area you make it easy to get a coyote and also stop the other animals from getting in your sets that can come up with coyotes.I trap this way for year and I am on all private land and the land owners want all I can take out beside the coyotes because want to have the game birds show up.What I do get adds up for the end of when I sell the furs.

Here at home I trap alot of river routes by boat and canoe. I set many a sandbars for canines. I have also got in the habit of setting a couple dog proofs at the same time to catch the coons before they plug up a good flat set. Many a morning I have had a coyote waiting on me with A coon in each dog proof. For years I have thought of putting out a trail camera to see which was caught first.
Beware the pickle jar on the wood pile!

Our problem on our line isn't so much coons in coyote sets as it is possums plugging everything up including DPs. Caught a ton of possums in DPs. That is one animal we work to thin first before we can have much fun. Cold late winter is better for coyotes and cats only, but eventually it warms up again and all the rest of the zoo starts running again. Jim
