My uncle has one made from the burner out of a gas water heater. Works better than anything else I have personally seen.

I think I'm gonna order a basic setup from Amazon. See if it works. I don't want to sit at the fire for e hours before the water gets a boil. I dig the fires but it's not efficient.
At least not a fire the size I can get away with in my pit.

water heater burner assembly will be your best bet for btu's needed to heat 55 gallons of water in a timely fashion. The next problem is a 30 gallon l.p tank wont disapate from liquid To gas fast enough. The tank will freeze up losing pressure. A camper dual tank setup is your best option. A single tank will do around 75 -80,000 btu comfortabley. Most water heater burners are rated for 125-150,000 btus. Ive considered building a few but never figured there was a demand. A guy could also consider building a natural gas one . that could attach to your exsisting gas line. be very careful and have a licensed pipe fitter plumb it in. but ive plumbed them in for bbq grills so why not a trap boiling pot?

ken that will work perfect make sure you use a appliance regulator with it for safety! That's a burner assembly out of a turkey frier isn't it?

Excellent if you can find one or make one. 7" tall to fit between concrete blocks. It does blacken bottom of barrel; don't know if changing height would lessen sot buildup. That is the same one I bought. I cut a 55 gal drum off at 2/3. Tack welded it on the bottom, cut two slits through up to near the bottom of the barrel and bent IN (less to cut yourself on) for 8 inch wide upside down V opening. One for the torch, the other for more air as the 40 holes I shot were not nearly enough. Works slicker than coon fat on the shed floor. | | |

Most of the turkey fryer burners seem to be low pressure that I have found. I did run into a website that sells American made burners called Tejas Smokers.

I still dont have the cojones to cut on a cylinder...i know it can be done and know how but i have bad luck with Murphy's law. That barrel set up works like a big rocket stove and i havent looked back. Its a shame though i have a couple old very large cylinders id like to turn into bells.

Iv'e had that same unit for 35 years, it was called the hot one made by a guy in Pa. I think. Gets stuff hot quick... Did 80 galons of waxed sand, dyed and waxed all my land traps on one propane tank.
