What kind of sets would you guys recommend for short grass paths going through crp fields. Ivd tried dirt holes in the past with no luck and was wonderig if alot of dirt showing in grass makes them wary of it, also would sets on these paths be best in the middle or use the crp field as a backing? And one more dumb question kind of unrelated. I might have some time to take my grandpa predator calling in early october like the 7th to be exact. If we had luck would the fur maybe be good enough? i know they say early is better than later but if thats way to early i think ill just wait till trapping season. Thanks for your help!

Sounds like it is an ideal location for Zagger'a pipe dream set. Personally, I make urine sets in those locations and blend the trap bed in with grass clippings so it all looks natural.

If there is a road way near by set there. or where another road or path cross or meet.use some flat sets also. As for how the fur will be I say if it look good sell it.You are better off get something for it then waste it.No matter how much you get for it.

yes

But the intersection mentioned above is good. I would simply blind set it in several places and blend with grass clippings or grass duff.

Thanks for the responses, would u recommend drilling a small deep hole for the flat set and putting bait in it or just shoving it under some grass? Also i have used snares with success on game trails through the crp but they run the atv trails hard and the grass on the trails is just to short for snares

The pipe set kind of intruiges me i think ill try that too the pipe sticking out would definitely help in finding the trap back when its time to pull

Scrape about a 3' or 4' circle of that mowed grass down as close as you can get it to ground. A common weedeater hauled in makes some great short grass circles. Then put one object in middle like bleached cow bone, end of freshly cut thick branch, or char burned log from an old campfire...the fireblackened wood is something that really stands ou. Even a couple of sod plugs stacked in middle of circle have great eye appeal.
A dirthole can be made at base of the object or use the object as a pee post or visual for a flat set.
You can also just put a good loud call lure over in tall grass next to set in short grass, upwind side. Have to get them to pause on way by somehow to check out your set. Go back several dozen yards and kneel down...if you can see the visual over the grass so can a coyote, so look at your set from their eye level from the approach in distance. Sunbleached white bone or charred black wood are couple of my favorites in grass locations.
The short grass lanes should be great travelways...coyotes will walk the easy paths just like you and I will.

Money cannot buy you happiness, but it can buy you a trapping license and that's pretty close.

I would say go predator calling with your grandpa even if it was July 7th. I would love to be able to do something with one of my grandpas. Both are gone.

Amen the only hunts I'm planning this year are with my grandpa.

Seeing what yotes can do to the fawn crop I kill them 365! Now I wouldn't skin one but I might gland it if the fleas weren't to bad! Memories are worth more than any ole yote hide anyways! But to answer your question. I put flat sets in the taller grass between the tire tracks! If they are traveling the roads your smells are under their nose!

I going to take round up and kill some spots for sets in grass paths around our crp fields this year.By the time Nov Dec rolls around I would think the critters would be used to the bare spots. Trying to decide how big of spot to kill now

I tend to have good luck with compass sets on crop roads with very short grass. I use lures and no bait. Seems to catch most of the season (when I can keep traps working). If you have chance to hunt early go!! You can always tan the pelt, hang it or put over the back of the sofa for memories.
