Those of you that elevate some of your fisher sets on a tree...Do you put it on a leaner or do you mount it vertically on a standing tree?
I got my last fisher on the ground but am pondering a slightly elevated spot in a certain area to reduce thr risk of incidental contact with my trap.

I put mine on a leaner:

The only constant in trapping is change so keep learning.

I do both but I really like leaning poles, looks more appealing in my opinion. If I can't find a leaning pole I set vertically. That being said I've probably caught more on the ground.

Elevated marten boxes are selective for juvenile fisher in our area.
We did a 4 year study here with all the trappers submitting jaws (teeth) from all the incidental fisher caught in their marten sets for aging. The results over the 4 years was a 9 to 1 ratio of juveniles to adults caught.

Catching higher ratios of juveniles is a preferred method of management for fisher and marten.

Forget that fear of gravity-get a little savagery in your life.

Elevated sets are useful when you have traps that are only checked periodically. Elevated sets also have a much higher catch rate for squirrels. Fisher are much easier to catch on the ground. If you are trapping and expect heavy snows and only check your sets once or twice a week elevated sets are necessary, but expect to catch some squirrels. Some fisher will climb and be caught in an elevated set, but many will not. Most all fishers will work a set on the ground & where I trap ground sets will get the large adult males that don't want to climb. I swing both ways & find fisher much easier to catch on the ground.

I do both, cubbies and leaning pole. Mainly for that occasional fisher that refuses to climb. But have had the most success with the leaning pole. Also helps avoid non-targets
