Before . . .

Bed trap

Take your propane torch and heat a spot on the rock

Add just a little piece of raw meat.

Now burn the meat to black. Let the juices flow down the front of the rock.

Finished set. No lure or other smelly stuff needed. Works well as a gang set or down wind of a call lure in a bush, etc. For paranoid coyotes, don't use any other smells. For states with expose bait laws, just rotate rock until meat is hidden.

Cool! A little off topic...I have a couple locations with similar soil conditions (sandy gravel)...in an effort to finish the set so it blends with the surrounding area, what do you do, if anything, about preventing gravel from getting stuck in the trap levers, etc., causing the trap not to spring properly? This has happened to me on several occasions.

Thanks!

Dino

Don't know that I have all the answers but one thing that helps me is to locate where your levers meet the jaws. I put a stick (a little bigger than a wooden match) on the outside of the jaws right at that junction. I usually also put one on the outside of the jaws right where the dog is. Then when I cover the trap, I know right where my jaws and levers are. Anything between the three sticks gets real close scrutiny and pebbles get removed. The sticks also act as guides to keep critters off the levers and the dog.

Other than that, I try to blend the trap as best I can, then get down real close and pick out any pebbles between my three sticks.

Thanks, good idea! I can see your sticks in the second photo.

Good luck!

So coyotes will step on those rocks but not a little stick?

"Del Kramer", haven't heard that name in a while. How do you know Del? I'm sure he and some of those other great trappers like Skoggins are long gone by now.

Wish I hadn't loaned my signed copy of Delmer's book to someone who didn't return it. I'd love to buy another copy.

Just a word of advise. In wetter parts of the country, that could get dangerous. Moisture trapped in the rock when heated makes steam, which will blow a chunk or rock chards at your face. Tracy doesn’t have to worry about such things in the desert, near as much as the rest of us! I once had a big chunk of concrete blow out from heating a steel plate, three feet from the plate. This can get real!
